Mitsubishi engineer instills renewed hope for the Lancer Evolution's comeback, suggesting an electrified future in collaboration with alliance partners.

A Mitsubishi engineer acknowledges that the aspiration for a new Lancer Evo is still very much alive.

The future Evo might feature hybrid technology along with advanced all-wheel-drive capabilities.

The project needs to demonstrate its viability before it can receive approval for full production.

The automotive landscape has significantly transformed since the last Lancer Evolution was discontinued in 2016, during which Mitsubishi has focused on more lucrative endeavors and launched several rebadged Renault models across Europe.

Nonetheless, enthusiasts of the brand's rally heritage have reasons to maintain their optimism. The Lancer Evolution continues to be a frequent topic among Mitsubishi circles, serving as a (unfortunate) reminder that the company’s performance legacy is not entirely gone.

At the recent Japan Mobility Show, Mitsubishi unveiled several new models, including the Elevance three-row SUV concept, an updated Delica D:5 crossover minivan, and a new generation of the Delica Mini kei car. However, a performance model was notably absent.

In an interview with Australian publication Drive, Mitsubishi engineer Kaoru Sawase implied that the essence of the Evo is not yet fully extinguished.

“We have a dream, of course, for the Lancer Evolution. It’s my personal dream,” Sawase stated. When asked about the possibility of a new generation, he remarked, “We have a variety, a range of technologies available.”

Sawase's remarks likely refer to Mitsubishi's plug-in hybrid systems, which could be combined with the Super-All Wheel Control (S-AWC) system he contributed to. He also recognized that any future Evo would need to adopt electrification, stating, “I fully understand electrification performance regarding vehicle dynamics.”

What Could It Be Based On?

Mitsubishi’s existing plug-in hybrid system, utilized in the Outlander PHEV, combines dual electric motors with a petrol engine, delivering a total output of 302 hp (225 kW / 306 PS). The Elevance concept follows a similar approach but enhances it with four electric motors and an engine designed for carbon-neutral fuels.

Theoretically, it wouldn’t be challenging for Mitsubishi to derive more performance from this configuration for a contemporary Lancer Evolution.

The bigger obstacle lies in justifying the investment for a completely new model without direct collaboration from its alliance partners, Renault and Nissan. After all, the standard Lancer sedan, which served as the original base for the Evo, has long been discontinued.

What’s Next For Ralliart?

Additionally, there's Ralliart, Mitsubishi’s revitalized performance sub-brand, which has thus far focused on cosmetic enhancements.

Sawase hinted at broader aspirations but refrained from providing specifics, saying, “Concerning the various uses of the Ralliart brand, these have been contemplated widely. However, we are not ready to discuss exactly what will transpire.”

In the meantime, the Evo legacy continues through independent artists and designers who continue to envision what could be. Among them is Hycade Design, whose digital sports sedan concept helps to visualize what fans still hope to see back on the roads in the near future.
