The new Tiguan SEL R-Line Turbo produces 268 hp (199 kW) and 258 lb-ft (349 Nm).
This represents a notable increase of 67 hp (49 kW) and 51 lb-ft (69 Nm) compared to the base Tiguan.
Additionally, the compact SUV is around 170 pounds lighter than its predecessor.
A new generation of the Volkswagen Tiguan is set to arrive in the US, offering more than just a facelift. VW is providing significant upgrades to its compact SUV, particularly for the top-tier model. The flagship trim, called the 2026 Tiguan SEL R-Line Turbo, boasts an enhanced performance thanks to a modified version of VW's renowned turbocharged engine. VW claims that this offers the Tiguan “a more sporting character.” Let’s delve into the engine specifications and what distinguishes this Tiguan.
Primarily, the engine is the EA888, a versatile platform within the VW group. In this Tiguan, it appears as a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder generating 268 hp (199 kW) and 258 lb-ft (349 Nm). More specifically, these figures will only be available in the SEL R-Line Turbo trim, not in the other trims VW plans to launch later this year.
To achieve that additional 67 horsepower (49 kW) and 51 lb-ft (69 Nm) over the base model, VW implemented several hardware enhancements, including a larger turbocharger, a lower compression ratio of 10.5 to 1, and reinforced internals. Indeed, VW is committed to robust components, incorporating stronger pistons, connecting rods, and a nitrided crankshaft in this engine. Similar to the base engine, it utilizes a high-pressure fuel pump capable of 7,252 psi (500 bar).
Increased Power, Consistent Transmission
The SEL R-Line Turbo is equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission and 4Motion all-wheel drive as standard. These specifications are significant for those who might mistake this for a budget-friendly Porsche Macan. Although the two vehicles share certain components, including the EA888 engine, the transmission and AWD systems are quite different.
VW’s 4Motion system predominantly favors front-wheel drive, while Porsche’s AWD is inclined towards rear-wheel drive for enhanced dynamics. Moreover, Porsche utilizes its seven-speed PDK transmission for quicker shifts. That said, VW should be acknowledged for addressing one of the most significant drawbacks of the previous model: the absence of a more powerful option.
The SEL R-Line Turbo also features standard 20-inch wheels and is available in three new colors: Avocado Green Pearl, Sandstone Uni, and Monterey Blue Pearl.
Additional Confirmed Information
Volkswagen has been teasing the new Tiguan for a while. In other regions, it has already been introduced as the Tayron. This model measures 4,684 mm (184.4 inches) in length, 1,854 mm (73 inches) in width, and 1,685 mm (66.3 inches) in height, with a wheelbase of 2,791 mm (109.9 inches). The exterior is characterized by what VW describes as “bold and expressive styling.”
It aims to enhance the sporty appearance (and driving experience, particularly in the SEL R-Line Turbo). This includes LED light bars at the front and rear, along with updated headlights and taillights.
The interior is expected to see significant improvements as well. The SEL R-Line Turbo will include genuine wood accents, Varenna leather seating, VW’s latest infotainment system, a 15-inch main display, and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster. Tri-zone automatic climate control and wireless mobile connectivity are anticipated to enhance the experience for both drivers and passengers. Additionally, it features 12-way power-adjustable front seats with massage, heating, and ventilation functions, with ventilation also available for the outboard rear seats.
Currently, the automaker has not released further details regarding pricing or availability. However, we will be test driving it next month, so if you have any inquiries about the upcoming Tiguan, feel free to leave a comment below.
