Mazda Halts CX-50 Exports to Canada Amid Increasing Tariff Conflict | Carscoops
Mazda has announced that it will cease production of the CX-50 for Canada due to tariffs imposed by the US and Canada.
Dealers will still sell limited stock already shipped or in transit.
Last year, the SUV represented approximately 15% of Mazda’s total sales in Canada.
The consequences of the tariff policies from the Trump administration continue to impact supply chains, and Mazda is now directly affected. The automaker stated it will halt production of CX-50s meant for Canada, a decision triggered by tariffs from the US and resulting Canadian responses.
Production will be paused starting May 12 at Mazda's Huntsville, Alabama facility, where the CX-50 is manufactured for the North American market. The company has not specified how long the pause will last. According to Mazda Canada spokesperson Sandra Lemaitre, retailers across the country will keep selling remaining inventory for as long as it lasts.
“Mazda Canada currently has a limited supply of CX-50s in inventory and in transit, which our retailers will continue to sell,” Lemaitre informed Auto News. There is currently no indication of how long the remaining stock will last.
In 2023, all 10,759 CX-50s sold in Canada were produced at the Alabama plant. The compact crossover was responsible for about 15% of Mazda's total sales in Canada last year.
Removing the CX-50 from the Canadian market will create a significant gap between the outdated CX-5 and the larger CX-70 within the local lineup. The Huntsville facility, shared with Toyota, handles production for all CX-50s destined for Western markets. A version specifically for the Chinese market is built in Nanjing. Last year, a total of 88,336 CX-50s were produced in Alabama, with most sold in the United States.
Mazda emphasizes the importance of “maintaining fair trade and economic stability globally and within the North American market, and we hope for a speedy resolution to the trade situation.”
Uncertain Future If Tariffs Continue
If the tariffs remain in place, Mazda may face challenging decisions. It could either increase the price of the CX-50 in Canada to cover the additional costs or consider withdrawing the model from the market entirely. For the moment, buyers seeking a CX-50 in Canada will need to act quickly, as the current stock is all that is available.
