The head of Peugeot intends for the e-208 GTi to create a connection between its road cars and racing vehicles and will consider developing a combustion version if there is enough demand from customers.
Recently announced, the e-208 GTi could potentially utilize the same powertrain as the Abarth 600e, with power figures exceeding 230 hp. Since 2021, Peugeot hasn't included a GTi model in its lineup, last featuring it in the 308.
Peugeot has confirmed plans to launch a GTi variant of the fully electric e-208 hatchback. While detailed specifications are still pending, this model could be appealing to buyers seeking an engaging EV.
Set to be the brand's first performance-oriented electric vehicle, the e-208 GTi is expected to be released “as soon as possible.” In a recent media interaction, Peugeot CEO Alain Favey mentioned that reintroducing the GTi brand will help reconnect with the company’s history while bridging a gap between Peugeot’s road cars and its participation in the World Endurance Championship.
Favey stated to Autocar, “I’m in a position to confirm that we will reintroduce the GTi on the e-208 as soon as possible. We've decided to bring back Peugeot GTi. We want to maintain the brand's reputation for driving excitement and ensure that our cars offer distinct driving sensations for both drivers and passengers.”
The GTi variation of the e-208 will share its platform with the standard model but may also take powertrain components from the Abarth 600e, which features a front-mounted electric motor producing 237 hp and includes a Torsen limited-slip differential. Considering that the e-208 is slightly smaller than the 600e, this hot hatch is expected to be quite agile, potentially reaching 60 mph (96 km/h) in under 6 seconds.
Favey also noted that aside from the e-208, Peugeot would consider launching a new combustion engine GTi if there is customer interest.
“We will begin with the 208 and are definitely listening to feedback from our customers,” he mentioned. “While we are not ruling out the possibility of other variations of the 208 GTi under the GTi brand, there are currently no plans in that direction.”
