You rarely encounter unusual supercars these days. Instead, you'll find ones that are unattractive, loud, or gorgeous, but none that cause you to raise an eyebrow. The Lamborghini Pregunta, much like its Spanish name suggests, provokes curiosity. Questions like, “Was this made before or after the Pagani Zonda?” and, “What will it sell for at auction?” as it prepares to hit the block next month.

The Pregunta concept came before the Zonda but after the Lotec C1000, resembling a blend of both with its uniquely arranged circular lights, silver finish, and wedge-like proportions. However, the Pregunta is more rounded than those Mercedes-powered vehicles and is technically older too, as it is fundamentally a Diablo underneath.

For the Pregunta, Lamborghini collaborated with French coachbuilder Carrosserie Heuliez, particularly designer Marc Deschamps, to redesign the Diablo to mimic a Dassault fighter jet, crafted from carbon fiber. While the exterior was forward-looking, with its smooth yet shapeless silhouette, the interior was otherworldly. I appreciate a blue interior, but the dashboard design resembles the upholstery of a Neptune Greyhound bus. That’s actually the screen for a rearview camera just below the windshield; talk about progress.

Although based on the Diablo, the Pregunta’s 5.7-liter V12 produced more power than any production Diablo at the time, generating 530 horsepower and 446 lb-ft of torque directed to the rear wheels. It was coupled with a five-speed manual transmission, which might make the car feel even more dated than its design. According to Broad Arrow Auctions, which is overseeing the sale, the unique Pregunta has had only one private owner in the past twenty years and is anticipated to sell for up to $4 million when it finds a new owner on October 10 in Belgium.

The Pregunta was the last creation of Lamborghini under Megatech ownership before Audi acquired the brand. The subsequent Lamborghini saw a softer design; it became more polished, more professional, and less eccentric. By the time the Pregunta was introduced at the 1998 Paris Motor Show, Audi had been in charge for roughly a month. Little did they know the future it hinted at would never truly materialize.
