The 1972 Porsche 911 S/T clinched victory in its GT class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

In 2013, Porsche Classic completely restored the original car for a collector in Switzerland.

The same collector has now commissioned this new build as a tribute to the original.

Until the (rumored) GT2 RS is unveiled, the Porsche 911 S/T will remain the pinnacle of the limited-edition 992-generation. It combines elements from both the GT3 and GT3 RS while maintaining a remarkably understated appearance.

Numerous eye-catching S/Ts have already reached their owners, but this one, crafted through Porsche’s Sonderwunsch program for custom, highly personalized builds and unique commissions, may be the most captivating of all.

The narrative of this new 911 S/T actually starts back in 1972. That year, Porsche manufactured the original 911 2.5 S/T, modified for racing and ultimately triumphant in its class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. It was painted in a bright Light Yellow and carried the number 41 on its doors along with various period sponsorship stickers.

From Forgotten Barn Find to Factory Spotlight

Following its racing success, the car faded into obscurity, eventually being stored in a barn in San Francisco. A Swiss collector discovered it in 2013 and tasked Porsche Classic with restoring it completely. Thus, when Porsche revealed the modern 911 S/T, the same collector commissioned one through the Sonderwunsch program, aiming to replicate his historic racer’s appearance down to the last detail.

Like the original, the new car shines in the same Light Yellow hue, which hasn’t been available from Porsche for several decades. It is fitted with forged magnesium wheels in a Darksilver finish, complemented by black brake calipers.

      A Homage With Restraint

The Sonderwunsch team then added the same roundels as the original and meticulously recreated all of the sponsorship decals. The only missing element is the additional rally-style headlights found on the 1972 model.

The pricing for this tribute has not been revealed. The standard 911 S/T already retailed for around $290,000 before customization, so it is reasonable to assume that the enhancements needed for this factory-level homage have pushed the final cost significantly higher into six-digit territory.
