The Japanese GR Corolla has received additional structural adhesive and a new engine cooling duct.
The updates focused on track performance, drawing inspiration from motorsports to improve capabilities.
A software upgrade will increase torque and adjust the GR-Four settings for earlier models.
Shortly after news broke about the upcoming GRMN, the spotlight shifted to the latest iteration of the GR Corolla. Toyota's hot hatch has undergone several updates in its home country, featuring a stiffer body, improved engine cooling, and a better sound system. Significantly, the company has committed to increasing supply without altering prices.
More Structural Adhesive and Enhanced Cooling
The 2026 GR Corolla builds on insights gained from the Super Taikyu Series, aligning with Akio Toyoda’s conviction that motorsport provides the best foundation for developing superior road cars. Consequently, engineers have added an extra 13.9 meters (45.6 feet) of structural adhesive, bringing the total to 32.7 meters (107.3 feet). This additional adhesive is concentrated around the front body, floor, and rear wheelhouse, enhancing chassis rigidity without substantial weight increase.
According to Toyota, enhanced rigidity is crucial for stable driving on "overseas circuits" where the vertical and lateral G forces are more intense than on "domestic circuits," clearly referencing the Nurburgring. Cooling improvements include a new duct on the secondary intake designed to maintain engine temperatures during prolonged high-load driving. The goal is to allow drivers to experience the car's full capabilities for extended periods on track.
Improved Cabin Sound Experience
Inside, the optional JBL premium audio system has been upgraded by adding a subwoofer in the trunk, raising the total speaker count to nine. All models equipped with JBL now come standard with an updated Active Sound Control (ASC) system.
The ASC has been fine-tuned to minimize harsh engine sounds while providing three selectable sound profiles and volume levels linked to different drive modes. It can amplify acceleration and gear changes with distinctive tones, even mimicking a bubbling effect when releasing the throttle. For those who prefer a quieter cabin, the system defaults to off and can be deactivated anytime.
No Mechanical Changes
There are no alterations to the engine; the turbocharged 1.6-liter three-cylinder engine continues to produce 300 hp (224 kW / 304 PS) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque. Power is delivered to all four wheels via either a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Software Enhancements for Existing Owners
Toyota is also developing an update for current GR Corolla owners who acquired their vehicles before the 2024 enhancements. This new software will unlock an extra 30 Nm (22 lb-ft) of torque, aligning them with the newer models. Additionally, the new settings for the GR-Four system will modify power distribution between the front and rear axles based on the selected drive mode. The upgrade is set to be available in spring 2026, with pricing to be announced later.
Same Prices, More Availability
Orders for the updated GR Corolla have already commenced in Japan, with initial deliveries anticipated for November. Prices remain unchanged, with the manual version priced at ¥5,680,000 ($38,500) and the automatic at ¥5,980,000 ($40,600).
Unlike previous years when sales of the GR Corolla in Japan were conducted via lottery, the updated model will have increased availability. This rise in supply is due to a new production line in the UK focused on export markets.
In North America, Toyota is expected to announce the upgraded 2026 GR Corolla in the forthcoming weeks. Based on an earlier teaser, it will feature revised aerodynamics, increased torque, and additional chassis tuning.
