Authorities in Louisville are aiming to deter street racing and takeovers.

Fifteen hours ago, Michael Gauthier reported that Kentucky police destroyed a Durango Hellcat in a noticeable public demonstration.

The SUV was confiscated in 2024 and was discovered to have numerous stolen parts.

Critics condemned the destruction, but police asserted that the vehicle was unsuitable for auction.

In a bid against illegal street racing and hazardous takeovers, the Louisville, Kentucky police department destroyed a 2021 Dodge Durango Hellcat. This event was framed as a 20-minute publicity stunt, culminating with Mayor Craig Greenberg pressing the button to crush the vehicle.

The high-performance SUV was seized during the 2024 Street Rod Nationals, and police indicated it was one of 167 vehicles confiscated since they intensified their campaign against street racing and takeovers in 2023.

The department explained their strategy, stating, “This isn’t just about one car. It’s about safeguarding lives, restoring order, and demonstrating that our city stands united against reckless actions.” They emphasized that the crushing was intended to “serve as a warning to those who believe they can turn our streets into racetracks.”

While the crushing itself was somewhat underwhelming, it angered several people who argued the vehicle should have been auctioned instead. However, the police department clarified that it “was found to contain multiple stolen parts, including its engine.” As a result, they deemed it “unfit” for auction or conversion into a police vehicle due to liability and cost considerations.

Cameras were rolling during the event, with the destruction reportedly captured by at least five different cameras, including one mounted on a drone. Nevertheless, they succeeded in drawing attention to their cause.

Mayor Greenberg remarked, “I will not tolerate behavior that endangers our people and families.” He noted that illegal street racing has decreased by nearly 40%, warning anyone considering it in Louisville to reconsider, as they are not welcome, and their vehicle will be seized. He reiterated that if a car is not street legal, it will be crushed.
