The battle for the American Nürburgring is heating up.
On Thursday, Chevrolet boldly announced that both the Corvette ZR1 and ZR1X surpassed the Ford Mustang GTD’s Nürburgring lap time. It only took about two hours for Ford CEO Jim Farley to react, stating, “Congrats to the Corvette team. Game on.”
This exchange occurred on the Corvette's Instagram post, where Farley simply commented on the announcement, which said, “Corvette fans–we got ’em.”
It couldn’t be more evident that Ford plans to return to the Green Hell with the Mustang GTD in an effort to achieve a faster lap time than Chevy’s Corvettes, utilizing its carbon fiber-bodied track vehicle.
When will this happen? That remains uncertain. However, it’s a logistical challenge involving transporting cars and equipment to Europe, renting the track, and hoping for favorable weather conditions.
The Mustang GTD comes with a price tag of $330,000 and was the first American car to complete a lap in under 7 minutes at the Nürburgring, a notable achievement.
The final lap time for the Mustang GTD was 6:52.072, achieved on the second attempt. Initially, the team reported a time of 6:57.685 during their first attempt, meaning they improved by five seconds in the second try.
In contrast, the Corvette ZR1 had a lap time of 6:50.763, while the ZR1X improved this time to 6:49.275.
Mathematically, Team Ford needs the Mustang GTD to reduce its lap time by nearly 3 seconds in the next attempt.
It’s important to highlight that the Mustang GTD is approximately 500 pounds heavier than its Chevy rival. Moreover, the Corvettes were driven by Chevy engineers, not professional racers, potentially leaving room for further improvements. Farley seems to believe the Mustang GTD has that potential as well.
