Mitsubishi has introduced the Outlander Trail Edition for the 2025 model year SUV lineup.

This is the first time the Outlander has received an “off-highway styling” package.

It features plastic cladding, black decals, new wheels, and all-weather floor mats.

Evidently, the addition of black trim and a touch of rugged aesthetics resonates with consumers. Automakers have recognized this trend, leading almost every SUV to undergo an “adventure” transformation that leans more towards urban appeal than off-road capability. Mitsubishi's latest entry into this market is the 2025 Outlander Trail Edition, an appearance package designed to make buyers believe it’s equipped for trails with its few plastic enhancements.

This new variant is characterized as an “off-highway styling and equipment package” tailored for the popular Outlander, aimed at attracting those with a more adventurous lifestyle. It debuted at a special event in early 2025 and has since been released in the U.S. market.

      Rugged Appearance, Same Base

Visually, the Trail Edition is notable for its added cladding around the wheel arches, lower bumpers, and doors, enhancing its outdoor appeal. Black decals on the hood and sides, along with a Trail Edition badge on the tailgate, bolster the rugged theme. Mitsubishi has also blacked out the mirror caps, door handles, Dynamic Shield grille, and window trim to finish the stealthy aesthetic.

Another feature is the optional Thule-branded Caprock rack, which can be equipped with accessory mounts for kayaks or cargo boxes and hitch-mounted bicycle racks available at Mitsubishi dealers. More importantly, the Outlander Trail Edition rides on a unique set of black 18-inch wheels with a basket-weave design, which can be fitted with Cooper Discoverer Road+Trail tires for better grip.

Inside, the Trail Edition includes all-weather floor mats and a cargo area liner, both branded accordingly. Standard features comprise synthetic black leather and suede seats, heated front seats, a power panoramic sunroof, and an eight-speaker Dynamic Sound audio system by Yamaha. Additional convenience features include headlight washers, heated windshield wipers, five USB-C ports, and Mitsubishi’s Mi-Pilot Assist suite of driver assistance technologies.

      Off-Road Style, On-Road Configuration

Beyond the optional all-terrain tires, the Trail Edition does not receive any mechanical enhancements compared to the standard Outlander. It continues with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a CVT and Mitsubishi’s standard S-AWC all-wheel-drive system. The suspension remains unchanged, making this version more suitable for gravel paths rather than rugged trails.

It's important to note that the 2025 model year will be the last to feature this non-electrified powertrain. The 2026 Outlander will transition to either a new turbo 1.5-liter engine with a mild-hybrid system or the recently enhanced plug-in hybrid setup.

The 2025 Mitsubishi Outlander Trail Edition is priced at $39,295, which is $1,360 more than the SE trim level it is based on. Competing models in this segment include the Nissan Rogue Rock Creek Edition, Subaru Forester Wilderness, Honda CR-V TrailSport Hybrid, and Toyota RAV4 Woodland Edition.
