Hundreds of Positions Lost as JLR Struggles with Tariffs and a Plunge in Jaguar Sales | Carscoops
The situation at Jaguar Land Rover appears challenging as Jaguar undergoes a revival while Land Rover struggles significantly due to tariffs.
Jaguar Land Rover is eliminating up to 500 management positions in the UK.
This decision comes after a notable drop in sales linked to tariffs and the overhaul of the Jaguar brand.
JLR asserts that this action is part of standard procedures, despite facing several ongoing challenges.
After experiencing a series of difficulties in recent months, the Jaguar Land Rover group is bracing for another difficult quarter, with declining sales and increasing operational pressures clouding its short-term outlook.
Earlier this month, the company revealed disappointing figures with retail sales plummeting by 15.1% to 94,420 units, primarily due to two significant factors: the planned discontinuation of older Jaguar models and the effects of heavy tariffs imposed by the Trump administration.
Tariff-Induced Shipping Disruptions
In response to the tariff increase, JLR halted shipments to the United States in April, which accounts for a 12.2% decline in wholesale volumes in North America compared to the previous year.
Recently, British media reported that Jaguar Land Rover is reducing its workforce due to escalating challenges. According to BBC News, up to 500 managers will be let go under a “voluntary redundancy scheme.”
This reduction represents less than 2% of the UK workforce and the company has labeled it as a “normal business procedure.” Nevertheless, the circumstances at JLR are far from typical as one of its flagship brands awaits a significant transformation.
In addition to the changes at Jaguar, Land Rover is significantly affected by tariffs. Even after the US-UK trade agreement, the import tariff rate rose from 2.5% to at least 10%. Furthermore, an analyst indicated that the widely popular Defender model, manufactured in Slovakia, faces a substantial 27.5% tariff upon entering the U.S. market.
