Tesla Model Y and Model 3 Receive Unexpected Speed and Range Improvements in China | Carscoops
Tesla has enhanced the range of specific Chinese electric vehicle models by 25 miles without increasing the battery size.
The Model 3 Long Range AWD is now rated at 468 miles, while the equivalent Model Y is rated at 466 miles, according to the CLTC standards.
The Model 3's acceleration from 0 to 62 mph has improved from 4.4 seconds to 3.8 seconds, although the updated sedan comes at a higher price.
Although the new Model Y was introduced just a few months ago, Tesla is already implementing modifications to attract buyers—especially in China—due to declining sales and stiff competition.
The Long Range AWD versions of the refreshed Model Y and Model 3 in China now offer increased range and improved acceleration following minor adjustments announced this week. Tesla now asserts that the Model Y can travel 466 miles (750 km) on a single charge, up from 447 miles (719 km) under the CLTC testing cycle, without altering the battery size.
In addition, the Model 3 sees an even larger increase, adding 25 miles (40 km) to achieve a total claimed range of 468 miles (753 km). However, it is important to note that these figures are based on the Chinese CLTC and are not directly comparable to the more reliable EPA estimates, with Tesla stating 327 miles (526 km) for the US-spec Model Y LR AWD and 346 miles (557 km) for the Model 3.
The Model 3 has also become significantly quicker following the changes, now reaching 62 mph (100 km/h) in just 3.8 seconds instead of 4.4 seconds. The specifics of this improvement are unclear, but Car News China speculates that Tesla may have made the Sports acceleration feature standard, which previously cost ¥14,100 ($2,000).
In contrast, the Model Y is less quick, taking 4.3 seconds to reach the same speed. The acceleration figures for these models do not align with Tesla's claims in Europe, where the Model 3 is said to have a 0-62 mph time of 4.4 seconds, and the Model Y is rated at 4.8 seconds.
These upgrades come at no additional cost for the Model Y, priced at ¥313,500 ($43,800), while they increase the price of the Model 3 Long Range AWD by ¥10,000 ($1,400), bringing it to ¥285,500 ($39,900). For context, the equivalent Model Y in the US is $2,310 cheaper compared to its price in China, factoring in the $7,500 federal tax credit, and the Model 3 is only $90 more expensive.
It remains uncertain if these upgrades will extend to other markets. Tesla has yet to confirm any plans, but consumers in Europe and North America will likely be keenly observing to see if these range and performance enhancements will be introduced outside of China.
