Tesla is marking the occasion of the world's first fully autonomous car delivery.
A Tesla Model Y was delivered to its owner with no one inside.
The electric crossover traveled for nearly 30 minutes alone.
This vehicle was fitted with robotaxi software, which was subsequently replaced by Full Self-Driving (FSD).
Acquiring a new vehicle might soon get simpler as Tesla has shared footage of theworld’s first autonomous delivery of a car. As stated by the automaker, the Model Y operated for about 30 minutes from their Gigafactory in Texas to its owner's home.
The complete video was posted on YouTube, indicating that the electric crossover was initially equipped with “robotaxi software,” which was altered to Full Self-Driving (Supervised) upon delivery. This is noteworthy for several reasons, particularly since the vehicle did not have a safety driver present, unlike the robotaxis in operation in Austin, Texas.
In a typical Tesla manner, the company has kept details to a minimum, but CEO Elon Musk noted, “There were no people in the car at all and no remote operators in control at any point.” He added, “To the best of our knowledge, this is the first fully autonomous drive with no people in the car or remotely operating the car on a public highway.”
In January 2024, Waymo announced that it would start testing its fully autonomous passenger vehicles without a human driver on highways in Phoenix, aimed at assisting Waymo One riders in reaching their destinations safely and efficiently.
Nevertheless, many questions remain, particularly regarding whether staff were involved in removing the robotaxi software and installing FSD (Supervised). If no personnel were needed, this could usher in a new era of car purchasing where consumers can buy online and have their vehicles delivered directly. An over-the-air update could then install the new software, potentially allowing customers to avoid visiting a dealership or interacting with others altogether.
“There were no people in the car at all and no remote operators in control at any point. FULLY autonomous! To the best of our knowledge, this is the first fully autonomous drive with no people in the car or remotely operating the car on a public highway.”
