The builder converts vintage 2002s into lightweight carbon masterpieces, each priced at over $200,000.

Every vehicle features a carbon fiber body, reinforced chassis, modern suspension, and upgraded powertrains.

Enthusiasts who appreciate the style can also purchase parts for their 2002 without opting for a complete build.

Passion can inspire us to undertake remarkable endeavors. In Paul Lefevre's case, his admiration for the classic BMW 2002 prompted him to establish a restomod company entirely focused on it. Through his brand, Son of Cobra, Lefevre takes an ordinary (if such a term applies) 2002 and transforms it into a fully customized, lightweight, carbon fiber performance machine. His meticulous attention to detail may very well position his creation as a significant contender in the classic BMW scene.

More: Which BMW Model Or Era Had The Best Interior Design?

These cars can be seen as responding to an unasked question: How would a 1970s BMW driving machine appear if there were no budget constraints? What materials would be employed? This is precisely what the Son of Cobra 2002 embodies—a uniquely crafted vehicle aimed at modernizing elements of the car while preserving its essence.

      A Small Operation, By Design

Lefevre intentionally maintains a low production rate. He produces only one or two cars annually, and to date, only five customer vehicles have left the workshop. “I prefer to provide the donor car, so customers don’t have to search for one, which might not be suitable for modification," he explains.

“I also like to choose my customers because there’s a diverse range of preferences out there. I feel that my customers become part of the family, fostering a more personal atmosphere than a traditional business transaction. The connection between the customer and myself is essential in bringing that car back to life,” he shares with Road & Track. Maintaining as much creative control as possible is crucial, which allows Lefevre to fully explore his design vision.

      Carbon, Power, and Precision

His completed 2002s feature an entirely carbon fiber body, resulting in a weight reduction of around 450 pounds (200 kg). Additional bracing enhances the chassis for superior handling, driver feedback, and responsiveness. Each car is equipped with a refined steering rack, pedal box, and engine.

Regarding the engine, Lefevre offers customers a choice between a stroked M10 engine, which the original 2002 featured and produces 180 horsepower (134 kW), or an S14 engine sourced from the E30 M3. The former generates at least 192 horsepower (143 kW) and can exceed 200 (149 kW). Ultimately, these vehicles boast increased power, reduced weight, modern suspension, and a sturdier chassis.

The interior also reflects meticulous attention to detail, with wool square weave carpeting complementing a carbon fiber dashboard and modern gauges. The carbon fiber roof displays exposed weave patterns overhead. Customers can also request bespoke modifications for the interior.

As expected, dedicated 2002 enthusiasts are eager to purchase one, even with a starting price that typically exceeds $200,000.

      Not Just for Full Builds

Perhaps the most appealing aspect is that owners of existing 2002s need not commit to a full custom build to benefit. Lefevre offers numerous components separately, including carbon fiber body panels, adjustable control arms, and eye-catching 6061 aluminum door handles. This business may cater to a niche market, but for those who share Lefevre's passion for the 2002, it is one that is greatly valued.
