Elon Musk has committed to starting the production of the long-anticipated Cybercab before 2027.

This Model 3 features a gold finish that extends to the roof and rear window.

Tesla has integrated several new exterior cameras into this intriguing prototype vehicle.

It may either serve as a test mule for the Cybercab or a preliminary version of Tesla’s forthcoming robotaxi.

Tesla's aspirations for a robotaxi seem to be progressing from mere concept to reality, with autonomous testing set to commence later this month in Austin, Texas. Meanwhile, a uniquely designed Model 3 prototype spotted in San Jose is generating speculation. Whether it is a one-off experiment or a cleverly camouflaged test mule for the upcoming Cybercab, it is evident that it diverges from the typical Tesla design.

Recently, the prototype was filmed in a public parking lot in California, displaying Texas manufacturer plates, which confirms it is not a privately owned vehicle. Similar to the Cybercab presented by Tesla a few months back, the prototype is entirely coated in matte gold, possibly as a wrap or paint. This gold finish covers the distinctive aero covers on the wheels and also obscures the entire rear window and the glass roof.

Among the intriguing features of this specific Model 3, a new camera protrudes from the front bumper, and the standard integrated cameras have been replaced with makeshift units crudely attached to the quarter panels. Additionally, another camera has been affixed to the trunk lid, contributing to the prototype’s expanding array of sensors.

Supporting the notion that this may be a test mule for the Cybercab, the rear side windows have been covered, revealing fixed camera units positioned behind them. The Cybercab revealed by Tesla last October included cameras in the same locations, which are unlike those found on any current Tesla model. Notably, the B-pillar trim is absent from this vehicle.

Unless perhaps someone at Tesla decided that the same innovative approach that replaced turn stalks with buttons on the steering wheel should apply to removing the glass roof and rear window for enhanced efficiency.

Elon Musk has stated that production of the Cybercab is set to begin before 2027, with initial pricing anticipated to start below $30,000. These targets are ambitious, especially for a manufacturer like Tesla, which has a history of missing its production goals.
