The brand has sold 176,913 vehicles in the U.S. this year to date, but its performance in May raised concerns about that momentum.

Mazda experienced an 18.6% drop in sales for May, despite exhibiting robust growth for the year up to that point.
The CX-5 and CX-50 continue to be the brand's top sellers for 2025 in the U.S.
Sales of the Miata plummeted by 62.9%, marking the steepest decline in the lineup.
After years of inactivity, Mazda appears to be compensating for lost time. The brand has been steadily gaining traction in the U.S., achieving a new sales record last year and maintaining that momentum into 2025. While year-to-date figures remain positive, May saw a significant downturn, which is unexpected given that buyers have been flocking to dealerships to avoid impending price increases due to tariffs.
The standout model for Mazda last month was the CX-70. Compared to May 2024, the SUV’s sales skyrocketed by 683.1%, with 1,065 units sold last month. However, it’s crucial to note that the CX-70 was only launched in the U.S. early last year, meaning consumer exposure in May of the previous year was limited.
Additionally, it’s important to mention that despite the sales surge of the CX-70, it still lags behind the CX-50 and CX-90. Mazda sold 7,188 CX-50s in May, a 14% increase over the same month last year, and 4,046 units of the CX-90, which reflects a 12% drop from May 2024.
Overall, Mazda experienced a sluggish May. The brand sold 28,937 vehicles in the U.S., an 18.6% decrease from May 2024. Some models were impacted more severely than others. The Miata took a substantial hit with a 62.9% drop in sales, while the CX-30 declined by nearly 48%. The CX-5, still Mazda’s best-seller, decreased by 24.6%. The Mazda3 Hatchback saw a decline of 24.4%, whereas its sedan counterpart enjoyed a modest 3% increase.
Despite the challenging May, Mazda’s overall year-to-date sales present a more hopeful outlook. In the first five months of 2025, the company has sold 176,913 vehicles in the U.S., marking a 6.1% rise compared to the same time frame in 2024.
The CX-5 remains the brand’s top seller with 56,501 units sold this year. Following it is the CX-50 with 38,243 sales, while the CX-30 rounds out the top three with 31,622 units. The CX-90 is maintaining its position with 24,601 units sold, and the Mazda3 (across both body styles) has reached 15,040 sales.
