Alongside the new GR Sport trim, the compact Aygo X becomes the first city car to feature a full hybrid powertrain.

The refreshed Toyota Aygo X showcases a more aggressive design and an upgraded hybrid 1.5-liter powertrain.

The new hybrid system delivers 114 hp, which is a considerable increase compared to the previous 1.0-liter variant.

The GR Sport trim adds sporty design elements and a chassis calibrated for improved handling dynamics.

In a segment typically lacking in surprises or significant technological advancements, Toyota has opted to change the game with its smallest model. The Aygo X has undergone a mid-cycle update, now featuring hybrid technology, more dynamic styling, and a new GR Sport variant.

The updated Aygo X borrows the self-charging hybrid system from the larger Yaris, promising enhanced performance and reduced emissions, giving it a competitive advantage in Europe’s growing electrified A-segment.

While most small urban cars predominantly rely on traditional internal combustion engines, mild hybrids, or fully electric systems, Toyota is the first to introduce a full hybrid option in this category. This means the previous 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine has been replaced by a more efficient hybrid 1.5-liter powertrain.

This new powertrain, the most powerful ever fitted in a production Aygo, combines a naturally aspirated 1.5-liter engine with a single electric motor, generating 114 hp (85 kW / 116 PS). This represents a 43 hp (44 PS) increase over the non-hybrid 1.0-liter engine used in previous models. Power is delivered to the front wheels through an e-CVT transmission.

According to Toyota, the acceleration from 0 to 62 mph (0-100 km/h) takes less than 10 seconds. More importantly, CO2 emissions are now reduced to 86 g/km, the lowest among non-plug-in cars available on the market. In addition to the environmental benefits, lower emissions in high-volume vehicles like the Aygo X will enable Toyota to introduce more internal combustion engine-powered GR models in Europe and the UK.

      The New Design and Structure

The new engine is accommodated in the Aygo X’s GA-B platform, which is also used in the Yaris and Yaris Cross. Toyota has elongated the front overhang by 76 mm (3 inches), bringing the total length to 3,776 mm (148.7 inches), while the wheelbase remains unchanged at 2,430 mm (95.7 inches).

Aesthetically, the updated Aygo X features a bolder front design. A redesigned bumper, larger grille, and a new trim connecting the headlights differentiate it from the 2021 model. Toyota has also modified the hood and front fenders, moved the side indicators to the mirror caps, and introduced new color options.

      A Modernized Interior

Inside, enhancements include a new 7-inch digital instrument cluster, wireless phone charging, and a standard electronic parking brake. Toyota has also revamped the climate controls and added two USB-C ports. The infotainment display, likely still measuring 9 inches in higher trims, may see minor interface updates.

Additionally, Toyota has focused on sustainability with interior materials, utilizing recycled plastics and fabrics while eliminating animal products entirely. The upgraded Toyota Safety Sense package now offers over-the-air software updates, ensuring features remain current without needing a dealership visit.

Despite the introduction of hybrid components, cargo capacity remains unchanged, with the trunk still able to hold 231 liters (8.2 cubic feet). This is achieved through smart packaging, with battery modules positioned flat beneath the rear seats and the auxiliary battery relocated beneath the cargo floor.

To enhance cabin comfort, Toyota has included noise reduction features such as dash silencers, bonnet insulation, and an improved exhaust system. Higher-spec models benefit from thicker window glass and additional soundproofing.

GR Sport: Sporty Appearance and Improved Handling

For the first time, the Aygo X lineup introduces a GR Sport trim. While primarily an appearance package, it is quite compelling, featuring 18-inch alloy wheels, a distinctive honeycomb grille, faux front intakes, and GR branding both inside and outside. An exclusive Mustard bi-tone paint option with a black hood is also available.

Under the surface, the GR Sport benefits from a revised chassis with retuned coil springs and dampers, as well as enhanced steering responsiveness. Though power output remains unchanged, these handling adjustments should make the vehicle feel more agile in corners.

      Availability

The facelifted Toyota Aygo X is set to launch in Europe and the UK towards the end of this year. Pricing details will be revealed later, but the hybrid technology will likely result in a higher price compared to its predecessor. Nevertheless, a starting price lower than the Yaris Hybrid, which currently begins at £23,445 ($31,700) in the UK, is expected.
