The 2026 Subaru Outback introduces a new Wilderness variant that offers enhanced off-road capabilities and a more aggressive appearance than previous models. It features improved off-road performance and a revamped engine, which I will elaborate on shortly. First, let's discuss the exterior design.

The most striking aspect is the new grille, characterized by large, vertical plastic bars on either side that evoke a bumper guard impression. Notably, there is no Subaru logo at the front; instead, the Outback Wilderness prominently displays "SUBARU" in large letters on the grille. It seems the designers may have drawn inspiration from American pickup trucks recently. You'll also spot orange accents on the roof rails, front fog lights, and taillights, along with increased ground clearance.

The Wilderness model sits approximately one inch higher than the standard Outback, featuring 9.5 inches of ground clearance compared to 8.7 inches. This elevation results in a 20-degree approach angle, a 22.5-degree departure angle, and a 21.2-degree breakover angle, in contrast to the regular Outback's figures of 18, 19.4, and 21.4 degrees, respectively.

New electronic dampers are said to enhance off-road performance without compromising on-road comfort and handling. The Outback Wilderness includes a new X-Mode Dual Mode (with options for Snow/Dirt or Deep Snow/Mud) that improves traction on uneven surfaces. On paved roads, Subaru claims this new suspension reduces sway and enhances stability. The Wilderness also comes with standard 17-inch matte-black wheels fitted with Bridgestone Dueler all-terrain tires, a redesigned rear bumper for easier trailer hookups, and a towing capacity of 3,500 pounds.

The Wilderness variant is also equipped with the Outback's most powerful engine, a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that produces 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque. This engine is standard for the Wilderness but optional for Outback XT models. Like all Subaru vehicles, the Outback Wilderness features a continuously variable transmission (CVT), along with an “eight-speed” manual mode that includes paddle shifters. The all-wheel-drive system’s center differential engages more quickly and utilizes steering angle data for sharper turns, which is also true for the standard Outback.

Inside, the Outback Wilderness does not significantly differ from the standard model, sporting a new 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and a 12.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system. It features some orange accents on the steering wheel and shift lever that coordinate with the exterior design, along with Subaru’s animal-free, water-resistant StarTex upholstery. This interior is arguably the most attractive offered by Subaru and includes the latest technology.

Subaru has introduced three new Wilderness models: the Outback, Forester, and Crosstrek. However, the Outback Wilderness stands out as the most powerful, with the greatest ground clearance and an upscale interior. Pricing details have yet to be revealed—Subaru mentioned this would be announced closer to the market launch in 2026—but the current 2025 Outback Wilderness is the priciest and the oldest, starting at $41,380. It wouldn't be surprising if the new variant comes in at a higher price point.
