The recently revealed plug-in hybrid versions of Audi's A5 sedan and Avant wagon feature a noteworthy 68-mile electric range, though a comparison with other PHEVs reveals a different perspective.

The A5's 2.0-liter engine, paired with electric assistance, produces up to 362 horsepower and boasts a WLTP-rated electric range of 68 miles (110 km). Audi plans to expand its PHEV lineup this year, with models such as the A6 sedan and Q5 SUV on the way.

Historically, plug-in hybrids offered disappointing electric ranges, and once the battery was depleted, they negatively impacted fuel efficiency due to the added weight of hybrid components. However, today's PHEVs are more practical. The new Audi A5 PHEV stands out with its electric range.

With a 249 hp (252 PS) turbocharged four-cylinder engine and options for two electric motor outputs, the e-hybrids produce either 295 hp (299 PS / 220 kW) or 362 hp (367 PS / 270 kW). The base version accelerates from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 5.9 seconds, regardless of whether you select the sedan or Avant body style, while the more powerful variant achieves this in 5.1 seconds, although both models are limited to a top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h).

Since there was no previous A4 PHEV, comparing with its predecessor is not feasible, resulting in lost sales to business customers. The new A5 features a 25.9 kWh battery that can be charged at 11 kW, allowing for a full charge from empty in just 2.5 hours. Quattro all-wheel drive comes standard, and regenerative braking can be adjusted via steering wheel paddles.

The official 68-mile range positions the A5 PHEV ahead of its BMW 330e competitor, which is rated at only 62 miles (100 km) after BMW upgraded the battery from 37 miles (60 km). However, the new standards in the plug-in hybrid segment mean other models may outperform the A5.

The competitor Mercedes C300e, although older and with a smaller battery, has an electric range of 71 miles (114 km), though it has a slower 0-62 mph time of 6.2 seconds compared to the Audi. Range diminishes with larger wheels.

Within the Volkswagen family, the new European-spec Tiguan hybrid, which is likely heavier and less aerodynamically efficient, claims an electric range of up to 77 miles (124 km). This leads to speculation that the A5's numbers could potentially improve even further.

The A5 PHEV will be available for order in Europe starting at the end of March, with prices beginning at €62,500 / £48,950 for the lower-powered sedan (the UK will not offer the more powerful variant). Additionally, Audi is set to launch PHEV versions of various models, including the new A6 and Q5, by the end of 2025.
