      Reports indicate that Audi's third-generation R8 will replace the naturally aspirated V10 engine with an electrified twin-turbo V8, which is already utilized in the Lamborghini Temerario.

      Audi is allegedly in the process of developing a new R8 that may debut towards the end of 2027. This supercar is anticipated to incorporate a plug-in hybrid powertrain and chassis derived from the Lamborghini Temerario. It is expected to achieve around 1,000 horsepower from the electrified twin-turbo V8, potentially making it Audi’s most powerful offering to date.

      The Audi R8 concluded production in 2024 without a direct successor expected, initially hinting at a fully electric model. However, recent updates suggest that the forthcoming R8 will instead adopt a plug-in hybrid configuration, building upon the Lamborghini Temerario's platform.

      The R8 was manufactured from 2006 to 2024, with a total of 45,949 units sold. The first generation was closely related to the Lamborghini Gallardo, while the second was akin to the Huracan, with both featuring naturally aspirated V10 engines at the pinnacle of Audi Sport's lineup.

      As reported by Autocar, the development of the third-generation R8 has exceeded initial feasibility assessments, with a projected unveiling in late 2027. In contrast to prior reports regarding a fully electric successor based on VW Group's forthcoming SSP architecture, recent claims indicate the next supercar will utilize a plug-in hybrid system.

      This electrified powertrain is expected to be shared with the Temerario, along with the aluminum spaceframe chassis and electronic components, furthering the partnership between the brands.

      The Lamborghini Temerario is equipped with a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine and three electric motors, producing a total of 907 horsepower (677 kW / 920 PS). There is speculation about an even more powerful variant in development that could generate upwards of 1,000 hp.

      With these specifications, the new R8 would become the most powerful and fastest roadgoing Audi ever produced, exceeding even the fully electric RS E-Tron GT Performance.

      To set its supercar apart from its Lamborghini counterpart, Audi Sport is reportedly emphasizing everyday practicality. It could be positioned as a competitor to premium versions of the Porsche 911 and the Mercedes-AMG GT. Like previous generations, the R8 is likely to feature a distinct design for both the exterior and interior and may be available in both Coupe and Spyder forms.

      The third-generation R8 is expected to be manufactured at the Böllinger Höfe facility, continuing the legacy of its predecessors. It is likely that Audi Sport will also create racing variants of the new R8, preserving the nameplate’s motorsport history.
