Electrified 2026 Mazda CX-5 Seen in North American and European Versions | Carscoops

      Here is our initial glance at the next iteration of Mazda's top-selling compact SUV.

      Prototypes of the third-generation Mazda CX-5 have been spotted undergoing development testing. The popular compact SUV is anticipated to make its debut in 2025 as a 2026 model year vehicle. The new CX-5 will feature a fully hybrid powertrain that has been developed internally.

      Update 3/10: Our spy photographers have captured another prototype of the 2026 Mazda CX-5, specifically the version intended for the European market, testing in Germany. At first glance, it appears almost identical to the North American version, with the exception of one minor difference in the front turn signal markers. The U.S. model has amber signals at the corners of the headlights, while the European version sports a different design. Since this is still a prototype, the final production model may undergo further adjustments.

      Mazda is preparing to launch the next-generation CX-5, almost nine years after the current second-generation model was introduced in 2016. Our spy photographers have spotted prototypes of the refreshed SUV on public roads in Los Angeles and Germany. The automaker has confirmed that its best-selling model will include an in-house-developed hybrid powertrain along with a host of other enhancements.

      While the prototypes remain camouflaged, they appear nearly ready for production, suggesting that an official launch is imminent. The 2026 Mazda CX-5 retains the familiar shape and greenhouse of its predecessor but adds a range of new design features that differentiate it.

      In terms of styling, the front of the vehicle introduces slimmer headlights that flow into the grille, reminiscent of the Mercedes EQC. True to Mazda’s signature design language, the sculpted bumper showcases a clean, minimalist style with a single cooling intake to avoid clutter. The profile features squared-off wheel arches similar to the CX-50 but is combined with more subtle plastic cladding, which may match the body color on certain trims.

      The rear section is where the design becomes particularly interesting. The third-generation CX-5 includes striking new taillights that echo recent BMW concepts, along with sharp LED graphics inspired by Mazda’s CX-60, 70, 80, and 90 series. A spacious tailgate dominates the rear, with additional plastic cladding on the bumper and prominently displayed dual tailpipes.

      Naturally, the European prototype lacks the amber indicators seen on the U.S. version. Aside from that, the two vehicles in development appear identical.

      While our photographers did not manage to capture the interior, it is reasonable to expect that Mazda will provide a modern cabin design featuring high-quality materials and the latest technology drawn from the brand’s larger SUVs. Mazda is known for creating interiors that exceed expectations, so the new CX-5 is expected to continue that trend.

      The real highlight, however, lies beneath the hood. The upcoming CX-5 will feature a self-charging hybrid powertrain developed in-house. This new electrified system centers around a more efficient combustion engine, unlike the Toyota-sourced hybrid available in the CX-50.

      Additionally, Mazda plans to equip the CX-5 with its next-generation Skyactiv-Z powertrains, set to debut by 2027. While details are limited, the Skyactiv-Z is expected to offer significant advancements in efficiency and performance.

      The second-generation CX-5 first launched in late 2016, with a mid-cycle update in 2021. It has consistently performed well in sales for Mazda, competing effectively against domestic rivals such as the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, and Subaru Forester.

      The new Mazda CX-5 is anticipated to be unveiled in the upcoming months, with its U.S. launch likely scheduled for the 2026 model year unless Mazda chooses to delay it to the 2027 model year.
