Typically, the trickle-down effect of race cars to everyday vehicles pertains to technology or data associated with quality, dependability, and reliability (QDR). However, wheels often don't take precedence for automakers. So, it's up to a Formula 1 enthusiast to make racing wheels available for the public—resulting in impressively striking designs.
Jon Olsson recently shared the outcome on social media (though we just encountered his vehicle lately). He has customized his matte black Audi RS6 with specially designed rims that perfectly match it, creating a look akin to if Batman transformed into one of the Transformers. It definitely makes a statement.
To give credit where it's due, Jon Olsson is not your typical F1 fan. The Swedish former Red Bull team freestyle skier has earned a Winter X Games gold medal and has entries in the Guinness World Records for his slopestyle skiing achievements. Now, as an entrepreneur, Olsson was so taken with the current design of F1 racing wheels that he sought to create his own.
While the wheel designs do not exactly replicate those of any specific team (likely to avoid copyright issues), Olsson's version strongly evokes the Red Bull F1 car with its red outer ring and neon yellow inner circle—something not surprising given Olsson's brand loyalty.
Regardless, the wheels may resemble ordinary black steelies, but they are elevated significantly in style. A pairing of these wheels can be observed on a dark-finished McLaren 720S on YouTube, starting at the 5:55 mark in the showcase.
“I’m still uncertain whether they look Mad Max crazy or simply cool,” Olsson remarked. “What are your thoughts?”
Viewers seem divided, with many favoring the F1 wheels on the Audi over the McLaren. One commenter noted, “They look like spare wheels!” regarding the latter.
“I love doing unique things,” Olsson admitted. “It’s challenging to create new designs for wheels since so much has already been done, but I think this is a look I haven’t seen on anything other than a Formula 1 car.”
Olsson had the designs for a year and a half before testing the wheels and moving into production. Anyone interested in obtaining their own set can reach out to him. Although these posts aren’t particularly fresh, more recent ones showcase the F1-style wheels with a slightly altered design.
Olsson does not disclose the specifications of the wheels, such as the materials or manufacturing process. For example, motorsports typically utilize forged magnesium alloy, machined as a single piece, similar to F1 practices. Likely produced on demand, Olsson’s F1 wheels will likely be priced higher than a set of BBS wheels (which are not inexpensive), but their appearance is undoubtedly distinctive compared to typical street cars.

If spare-tire steel wheels and F1 rims had a child, it would resemble this custom set that appears a bit mismatched on a street car but also seems just right.
