Like many, we appreciate V8-powered wagons. The Audi RS6 is undeniably impressive (even if it weighs as much as a small train), and we’re encouraged by Audi’s recent indications that this formula will continue. Even more exciting are the fresh spy shots of the German powerhouse’s successor.

As if that wasn't exciting enough, our spies have shared more promising news this morning: the RS6 wagon isn’t the only variant returning for 2027; the sedan will be back as well! As a proud member of the sport sedan community (and a Cadillac owner), I’m particularly excited about this development.

We’ve already spotted the new RS6 Avant on two occasions—once for each of the super-wagon’s powertrain options (yes, an electric version is reportedly in the works). A quick look at this prototype clearly identifies it as the RS variant. The distinctive wheel and brake setup is a significant indication, but the flared fenders and open vents, accompanied by oval exhaust tips at the rear, really emphasize its identity. Plus, I must say, it appears pleasantly compact. That’s the 2025 model for you.

Am I imagining things, or is there a hint of early-2000s Subaru Legacy in that rear design? I mean that positively; the 2006 Spec.B showcased an elegant design with clean lines and none of Subaru’s usual exaggerated rally attributes. If I tilt my head a bit, I also see a touch of Saab back there.

Given Audi’s typical release schedule, it may take another year or two before we see any of these variants in the U.S.—and let's face it, the likelihood of the electric model making it here is very slim.

There was a time when the new RS6 Avant was expected to be solely electric, but with the current state of affairs, that plan has been put aside. We reported in June that Audi is likely pursuing a plug-in hybrid version of its 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8. Since both gas-powered prototypes have shown decals suggesting they are equipped with hybrid batteries, this seems to be a certainty.
