Porsche Recently Acknowledged Its Mistake with the Macan | Carscoops

Porsche is set to introduce a combustion-powered compact SUV under a new designation, rectifying the mistake of an EV-only Macan.

The brand acknowledges that its strategy for an EV-exclusive Macan was flawed.

The new gasoline-powered SUV is expected to launch before the end of 2028.

Future models of the 718 will feature gasoline, hybrid, and electric variations.

Numerous car manufacturers are reevaluating their electric vehicle approaches. Some industry players might appear to have overcommitted. For example, Stellantis has faced challenges in consistently executing its EV strategy. Yet, it’s not only the known brands that are reversing course.

Conversely, Porsche is among those brands, joining others like Stellantis in reassessing its EV plans. The previous CEO openly accepted that shifting the Macan to an exclusive electric model was an error. Porsche intends to amend its oversight as well.

An Error in the Macan Strategy

Oliver Blume, who resigned at the beginning of 2026, disclosed that the decision to make the next-generation Macan solely electric was a mistake. He shared with Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung that Porsche’s 2019 choice to phase out the gasoline-powered Macan for an all-electric version was misguided.

When the EV debuted in early 2024, traditionalists were not fans, although many believed that most Macan buyers prioritized brand reputation over engine type. However, dwindling demand for expensive luxury EVs and regulatory obstacles made the all-electric Macan more challenging to market than anticipated. Blume admitted that hindsight provides clearer insight.

“Given the data available at the time, we would have made the same choice,” Blume noted, “but the current situation has changed. We are responding by introducing combustion engines and hybrids.” Porsche plans to relaunch a gas-powered compact crossover, which will not bear the Macan name.

      What Follows the Macan EV?

The new model, anticipated to be released by 2028, will fall within the same segment as the Cayenne SUV and is likely to utilize Volkswagen Group’s Premium Platform Combustion architecture, similar to the Audi Q5. Blume characterized the forthcoming crossover as “very, very typical Porsche” and intentionally different from the Macan EV.

Additionally, Porsche confirmed that future 718 sports cars, which were initially intended to become exclusively electric, will now include gasoline and hybrid options.

This situation underscores that even one of the world’s most renowned and focused brands can misjudge market trends and industry dynamics significantly. Ultimately, this leads to a greater variety of Porsches available, which is not something to regret.
