Nismo has unveiled a widebody hybrid hot hatch concept that goes beyond being merely a show car, as plans for production and racing are already in consideration.

Nissan Aura Nismo RS Concept hints at a more robust hot hatch. It features widebody design and power sourced from a hybrid SUV. This concept utilizes an all-wheel-drive hybrid system derived from the X-Trail Nismo.

Nissan aims to expand the Nismo lineup to ten models by 2028, though not all will be groundbreaking. Introduced at the Tokyo Auto Salon, the Aura Nismo RS Concept enhances the current Aura Nismo with a significantly revamped body kit and a more powerful hybrid powertrain.

The Aura Nismo RS is presented as a concept and functions as what Nissan describes as “a technical validation exercise.” This isn't just a display vehicle; the company, in collaboration with its Nissan Motorsport and Customizing (NMC) division, is exploring a potential production variant while also utilizing the concept to test future motorsport applications.

      A Wider, Lower Hot Hatch

Visually, the car diverges from its Note Aura origins, adopting a more track-inspired aesthetic. The most notable transformations include flared fenders that widen the body by 145 mm (5.7 inches), along with deeper front and rear bumpers that extend the car’s size by an additional 142 mm (5.6 inches).

In typical Nismo style, the splitter, side skirts, and diffuser feature red accents, complemented by additional intakes reminiscent of the GT-R. At the rear, a Formula 1-style brake light and a prominent rear wing are situated above the standard roof spoiler. Nissan states that the complete aerodynamic package aims to achieve increased downforce while reducing drag.

The overall appearance is enhanced with black alloy wheels, red brake calipers, and a matte gray finish dubbed Dark Matte Nismo Stealth Gray, featuring RS graphics to finalize the design.

      Hybrid Power from the X-Trail

Beneath the exterior, the hybrid system is directly derived from the recently unveiled X-Trail Nismo. This hybrid setup combines a turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine with two electric motors. The front motor generates 201 hp (150 kW / 204 PS), while the rear adds 134 hp (100 kW / 136 PS). The gasoline engine operates solely as a generator, producing 142 hp (106 kW / 144 PS) without driving the wheels directly.

However, the total system output isn't a simple linear sum. Given the X-Trail’s configuration, it’s estimated that the combined output is around 211 hp (157 kW / 215 PS) and 525 Nm (387 lb-ft) of torque.

Power is transmitted to all four wheels through Nismo’s version of the e-4ORCE all-wheel control system. While Nissan has not released specific acceleration figures, the Nismo RS is anticipated to be quicker than both the less powerful Aura and the heavier X-Trail.

      What Else Has Nissan Changed?

Though Nissan hasn’t provided extensive details on chassis modifications, it confirmed that the concept is positioned 20 mm (0.8 inches) lower than the standard model. Upgraded performance tires and brakes also form part of the enhancements to accommodate the additional 100 kg (220 lbs) compared to the regular Aura Nismo.

The foundation for all these changes is the Note Aura, which debuted in 2021 as a premium alternative to the standard Note hatchback. That model underwent a facelift in 2024 and is expected to remain in production until at least 2028.

This timeline presents Nissan with a solid opportunity to launch the Nismo RS version in showrooms in Japan. While it’s not positioned as a direct competitor to more hardcore hatchbacks like the Toyota GR Yaris, it would serve as an enticing addition to Nissan’s expanding performance lineup.
