Nissan hasn't made a significant announcement about it yet, but the Z has just undergone a series of updates in Japan, where it continues to be recognized as the Fairlady Z. Now four years into its production, the sports car receives a subtle facelift and, more crucially, mechanical enhancements that extend beyond merely cosmetic changes. While the redesigned bumper and nostalgic color options are easily noticeable, the real distinctions lie beneath the surface.
Beginning with the exterior, the overall shape remains unchanged, but the front bumper has been redesigned for a tidier and more cohesive appearance. The former vertical slits have been replaced by a more sculpted lower section and a body-colored crossbar that divides the grille.
Nissan states that the new front-end design is not solely for looks. The aerodynamic adjustments reduce front lift by 3.3% and drag by 1% compared to the previous model.
In other areas, the updates are more subtle. The remaining body panels remain the same, although the rear spoiler has been discreetly omitted. The company badge has been replaced with a simple Z emblem, and the alloy wheels feature a new bi-tone finish.
In terms of colors, the standout is a bold new Unryu Green, inspired by the S30’s Grand Prix Green. When paired with a tan interior, it evokes a vintage charm without feeling outdated. The Nismo variant, on the other hand, maintains its aggressive body kit with red accents, unique wheels, and a black interior finished in suede with red stitching.
Mechanically, the 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 engine remains unchanged. In its standard form, it delivers 400 hp (298 kW / 405 PS), while the Nismo version raises that output to 420 hp (313 kW / 426 PS). Power is sent to the rear wheels via either a six-speed manual or a nine-speed automatic transmission.
The major highlight here is the introduction of a manual transmission option for the Nismo, a long-awaited feature that is now finally available. This comes alongside improved ECU, ignition, and throttle tuning to enhance engine responsiveness and maximize driving engagement.
Despite the absence of performance upgrades, Nissan has equipped the car with new larger-diameter monotube shock absorbers to improve ride quality across the board. For the Nismo version, suspension tuning has also been further refined to achieve a balance between performance and everyday comfort. It also features more robust brakes adapted from the now-discontinued R35 GT-R.
The refreshed 2027 Nissan Fairlady Z will be displayed at the Tokyo Auto Salon 2026 from January 9-11. Its official launch in Japan is set for summer 2026. Nissan has yet to confirm details for the US-spec Z, but similar updates are anticipated to follow later this year.
