You can call it a comeback, but like all good things, the excitement won’t last forever. Tim Kuniskis, known as the Father of the Hellcats, is aware of this.

The Hellcat-powered Ram TRX made its return just eight days ago, but its future remains uncertain. In an exclusive discussion with The Drive, Ram CEO Tim Kuniskis stated, “I don’t know, call Washington. I have no idea.”

Kuniskis went on to explain, “It’s like when people ask me about tariffs. I don’t know. I don’t know, man. I make cars.”

Whether the TRX will survive for several years or meet a quick fate hinges on regulations and politics, both of which are currently in a highly unstable condition, much to the frustration of automotive executives throughout the industry.

In November 2021, I sat with Kuniskis as he indicated that the Hellcats would cease production after 2023 (specifically referring to the Dodge-branded models). The Hellcat-powered Ram TRX received a brief extension with a short 2024 model-year run, but production wrapped up in December 2023. Regulations put an end to the Hellcats, except for the Durango Hellcat, which somehow continued its final editions until the decision was made to produce it indefinitely.

Kuniskis, who was then CEO of both Dodge and Ram, retired in June 2024 but returned to Stellantis as Ram CEO in December of that same year, just a week after the company dismissed CEO Carlos Tavares.

A month into his new role, Kuniskis expressed willingness to reintroduce the Hemi V8. Six months later, the Hemi V8 made a comeback and was referred to as a “symbol of protest.”

A month after that, newly appointed Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa announced that the TRX would return in 2026, and it did—on January 1, 2026.

Kuniskis has been a strong proponent of “vehicle choice,” and the Trump administration has taken steps to dismantle car emission regulations.

However, Kuniskis’ response regarding the duration of the TRX’s return serves more as a caution to enthusiasts than it may appear. The situation is unstable, and even the CEO of Ram is unable to confirm whether we'll have the TRX in the coming years. The lively party is back for now, until the music stops once more.
