Honda is making a grand entrance at the Tokyo Auto Salon 2026 with a comprehensive array of concept cars, prototypes, and performance previews. Central to its display are two new Honda Racing Corporation (HRC) concepts inspired by the Civic Type R and the revived Prelude.
Also in the spotlight is the Civic e:HEV RS prototype, which emphasizes hybrid technology by utilizing simulated gear changes that mimic a conventional manual transmission.

Starting with the Civic e:HEV RS, this prototype enhances the RS trim that debuted in Japan last year. The initial version offered a sportier spin on the Civic hatchback, boasting a refined chassis, a turbocharged 1.5-liter engine, and a six-speed manual transmission.
The e:HEV RS diverges from this by replacing the combustion engine with a self-charging hybrid system. It incorporates Honda’s S+ Shift mode, which aims to provide a more engaging driving experience despite lacking a traditional gearbox.
The Civic e:HEV RS was presented in prototype form with an attractive livery, and Honda has stated it will be added to the production lineup in Japan later this year. It will be the second model to feature the S+ Shift technology, following the Prelude. This system simulates gear changes by adjusting RPM, torque delivery, and engine sound.

Regarding the powertrain, the e:HEV RS will probably employ Honda’s standard hybrid setup, combining a 2.0-liter engine with two electric motors to yield a total of 200 hp (149 kW or 203 PS).
In terms of aesthetics, the hybrid will look similar to the ICE-powered variant, adorned with red RS emblems, dark accents, black 18-inch alloy wheels, and potential aerodynamic enhancements. One significant visual distinction will be the lack of dual exhaust pipes at the rear.
HRC Concepts
On the performance side, HRC has introduced two new concepts featuring familiar nameplates. The first is the Civic Type R, showcased in full camouflage and outfitted with a more aggressive body kit. Notable modifications include reworked front and rear bumpers, extended side skirts, a prominent rear wing, and wider front fenders with integrated air vents.
While there isn't much detailed information concerning performance or handling improvements, the company asserts that the HRC-spec concept “further refines the joy of handling that only Honda can provide, honed at the cutting edge of racing.” It remains uncertain if this represents a preview of a more extreme Type R or serves merely as a platform for testing new components.

Simultaneously, the Prelude HRC Concept will feature its own enhancements, marketed as improvements that delve deeper into “the joy of driving.” This evolution builds on parts already available from Honda Genuine Accessories and Mugen, but the HRC Performance Parts take it a step further.
Aesthetically, the coupe appears ready for the track, sporting redesigned bumpers and side skirts with carbon fiber accents, wider fender flares, a fixed rear wing, and an expansive rear diffuser. New black alloy wheels complete the appearance, and the vehicle sits noticeably lower than the standard Prelude. Honda has not disclosed any modifications to the powertrain or chassis.
Completing the “Sport Line” lineup is the Honda HRC Prelude GT racecar, which will participate in the GT500 class of Japan’s Super GT series beginning in 2026. Additionally, for sim racing enthusiasts, Honda will unveil a new racing simulator inspired by the retired NSX-GT.
Honda Trailsport HRC Concepts
The other feature of Honda's booth in Tokyo is the “Trail Line,” concentrating on sporty off-road vehicles. The highlight comprises four Trailsport HRC concepts based on the production SUVs, merging rugged and sporty enhancements.
