BMW iX3 Exceeds Its Official Range By More Than 120 Miles in Real-World Testing | Carscoops
While the official WLTP range of the new iX3 is 497 miles, a BMW team managed to travel significantly further.
The iX3 50 xDrive completed a journey of 626 miles from Hungary to Munich with only 2 percent battery remaining, which could power an additional 12 miles.
To conserve energy, the SUV utilized smaller 20-inch wheels and did not use HVAC systems.
BMW’s latest advance in electric vehicles has proven to be more enduring than anticipated. The recently unveiled second-generation iX3 has surpassed even BMW's own projected range of 497 miles (800 km) under the WLTP cycle, although there are some caveats in the details.
In practical testing, the electric SUV achieved over 621 miles (1,000 km) on a single charge.
A BMW team was eager to determine the true range of their new model and embarked on a road trip from the Debrecen plant in Hungary, where the iX3 is produced, heading to Munich, BMW's headquarters in Germany.
They successfully completed the 626.1-mile (1,007.7 km) trip, finishing with 2 percent charge left, sufficient for approximately 12 more miles (20 km).
What Are the Caveats?
As anticipated, the team took several measures to maximize the iX3's driving range. For example, they avoided highways, opting for smaller, lower-speed roads that made the most of the SUV’s regenerative braking capabilities.
The iX3 was also fitted with smaller 20-inch wheels instead of the larger 21- and 22-inch options available. Additionally, they refrained from using heating, cooling, or the radio to conserve energy.
BMW chose the iX3 50 xDrive for this journey, the only variant announced so far, which features two electric motors generating 463 hp and 476 lb-ft of torque, enabling it to accelerate to 60 mph (96 km/h) in just 4.7 seconds, and equipped with a substantial 108.7 kWh battery pack.
