The new Crater concept offers significant insights into the camouflaged appearance of the next-generation Tucson.
Recent spy images highlight a more angular design for the 2027 Tucson.
The design reflects the boldness of the Santa Fe within a compact SUV format.
Hyundai is continuing its testing, hinting at a future 300-hp N hybrid variant.
Hyundai's next-generation Tucson has been spotted undergoing public testing once more, and despite the extensive camouflage still covering the prototype, one aspect has become quite evident: this SUV boasts a robust appearance that even the most optimistic teen could not replicate through aesthetic enhancement.
If the current Tucson resembles a smooth stone shaped by aerodynamics, the new version appears to be a solid block refined in a wind tunnel to soften its edges. Hyundai seems determined to give the Tucson a boxy stance reminiscent of how the Santa Fe evolved from a mundane family vehicle to an edgy, affordable alternative to the Land Rover Defender.

However, it might be more insightful to look at the Crater SUV concept, which Hyundai will showcase at this year's LA Auto Show, for clues about the Tucson's final design. While the prototype's roofline lacks a sporty angle, it shares similarities with the design arches, and there's a hint of curvature in the waistline where the door connects with the C-pillar.
Inside, details remain uncertain, but the sharper shape is likely to enhance headroom and rear seating comfort. A more significant alteration may occur in the front, particularly regarding the screen configuration. Instead of the merged digital gauge cluster and infotainment display seen in the new Santa Fe, there are indications that Hyundai might opt for a layout similar to what was recently previewed in spy images of the new Ioniq 3.
This forthcoming electric crossover was caught on camera featuring a slim instrument display behind the steering wheel along with a large, Tesla-like infotainment tablet positioned centrally on the dashboard. While it's difficult to confirm from the Tucson images, there appears to be a sighting of a similar slim speedometer.
While exact engine specifications are not yet disclosed, typical small-capacity turbocharged petrol and hybrid engines are anticipated to power the Tucson when it launches next year. A notable shift from the current model could be the introduction of a genuine N variant, distinct from the visually sporty but mechanically standard N-Line trim.
Recently, it was reported that Hyundai is exploring the possibility of a powerful 300 hp (304 PS) Tucson N, equipped with a high-performance hybrid engine designed to compete with the new 320hp Toyota RAV4 GR Sport. Preliminary information suggests that the front wheels of this sporty SUV would be powered by a combustion engine, while the rear axle would utilize electric power. If Hyundai proceeds with the Tucson N, it is likely to debut in 2027 or 2028, whereas the standard SUV will be revealed next year.
