BYD Launches Attack on Japan's Kei Cars with New Racco | Carscoops

The Chinese automotive powerhouse is set to disrupt Japan’s microcar scene with the electric BYD Racco.

BYD Racco, the brand's inaugural kei car, was revealed ahead of its official launch.

It boasts an upright posture with design elements reminiscent of Japanese competitors.

The vehicle is projected to deliver a range of 112 miles and comes equipped with ample features.

BYD is ready to enter one of Japan's most clearly defined and sought-after vehicle categories with the Racco, a small EV that signifies the company's first foray into kei cars. Early leaked images from a presentation event have surfaced prior to its official unveiling at the Japan Mobility Show.

At first glance, the Racco adheres closely to traditional kei car design standards, which is to be expected given the stringent size and proportion regulations that characterize the segment.

The window line and fin-shaped pillars are similar to those of the previous-generation Mitsubishi ek Space, while the headlights and overall stance appear influenced by the Daihatsu Tanto.

The Racco features a compact hood, an upright windshield, sliding doors, flat sides, and a nearly vertical rear end with minimal overhang. It includes a C-shaped LED light signature at both front and rear, and is equipped with 15-inch alloy wheels, as well as disc brakes on all four wheels.

While complete specifications are not yet disclosed, kei car regulations limit the vehicle's length to 3,400 mm (133.9 inches), its width to 1,480 mm (58.3 inches), and its height to 2,000 mm (78.7 inches). These stringent dimensions shape the design and packaging strategy of every model within this distinctly Japanese category.

      Powertrain Details

Reports indicate that the electric version will provide a choice of 20 kWh or 40 kWh battery packs, offering an approximate range of 180 km (112 miles).

It is also anticipated to support fast charging capabilities of up to 100 kW. The floor-mounted battery placement will contribute to a lower center of gravity compared to internal combustion engine-powered kei cars, enhancing handling.

Inside, the Racco will likely feature a digital cockpit with a sizable infotainment system that is uncommon in this segment. A comprehensive ADAS suite and a heat pump for air conditioning are also expected.

BYD plans to begin pre-orders for the Racco in the summer of 2026, with sales to follow shortly thereafter. The starting price is anticipated to be around ¥2.5 million ($16,500) before subsidies, directly competing with the Nissan Sakura and Mitsubishi eK X EV.

In addition to the kei car, BYD will also unveil a new light commercial vehicle designed for the Japanese market at the same event. The BYD T35 features a cab-over design and will be offered in both box van and flatbed configurations, equipped with a fully electric powertrain.
