The new Foton Tunland V9 incorporates American full-size truck aesthetics into a modern midsize design.

Foton is re-establishing its presence in Australia following an unsuccessful initial launch in 2012. The Tunland V7 and V9 pickups are equipped with a mild-hybrid turbodiesel engine. Both models feature design elements reminiscent of the Ford F-150 and Ram 1500.

Midsize pickups have always been popular in Australia, consistently ranking as the best-selling vehicles in the country. Recognizing this market, Chinese automakers have swiftly introduced various models to compete with longstanding favorites like the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux.

Foton has recently introduced its Tunland truck in Australia, which appears to heavily draw inspiration from American full-size pickup designs, specifically from two notable models.

Initially introduced in 2011, the latest generation of the Tunland debuted in 2023, coming in two versions: the V7 and V9, known as Mars 7 and Mars 9 in China, each featuring distinct front-end designs. Foton categorizes the V7 as "built for work" and the V9 as "built for adventure."

The base model V7 showcases headlights and taillights that closely resemble those of the Ford F-150, and its sculpted side profile channels the energy of the Toyota Hilux. It also features a large grille, elevated hood, and wide rear haunches that are similar to the Ford Ranger Raptor.

The design similarities are even more pronounced in the Tunland V9, which bears a striking resemblance to the Ram 1500's front. A Ram badge would fit seamlessly here. While its side and rear designs echo those of the V7, the V9 includes bolt-on wheel arch extensions and a sports bar.

Inside, both models take a more upscale approach, with a higher perceived quality. Standard features include a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 14.6-inch touchscreen, and leather seats. Furthermore, Foton provides a comprehensive suite of Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS).

The top-tier V9-S 4×4 model enhances the experience with heated and ventilated seats, heated outboard rear seats, a 256-color ambient lighting system, dual-zone air conditioning, wireless charging, and a panoramic sunroof.

In terms of dimensions, both variants share a 5,617 mm length, a 3,355 mm wheelbase, and a ground clearance of 240 mm, with the tray measuring 1,577 mm. The V9 is slightly wider at 2,090 mm (82.3 inches) due to additional plastic cladding.

Both models are constructed on a traditional ladder-frame chassis, utilizing leaf springs for the V7 and a multi-link setup for the V9 to enhance ride comfort. Each can tow up to 3,500 kg, with payload capacities ranging from 995 kg to 1,115 kg depending on the trim, aligning closely with competitors in the midsize truck sector.

Power is generated by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel engine featuring a mild-hybrid 48V system, designed in collaboration with UK engineering firm Ricardo. This engine produces 161 hp (120 kW/163 PS) and 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) of torque.

A ZF eight-speed automatic transmission manages the driving experience. All variants, except the base V7, are equipped with a four-wheel-drive system, while the entry-level model retains rear-wheel drive.

The Tunland signifies Foton's re-entry into the Australian market following a less successful attempt in 2012.

Pricing starts at AU$39,990 for the V7 and increases to AU$42,990 for the V9, which ranges between AU$45,990 and AU$49,990. This pricing positions it within reach for budget-conscious buyers.

Foton is joining an expanding roster of Chinese competitors already available in Australia, such as the GWM Cannon Ute, JAC T9, MGU9, and BYD Shark 6, all vying for market share in a domain traditionally dominated by vehicles like the Ford Ranger, Toyota Hilux, Mitsubishi Triton, Isuzu D-Max, Mazda BT-50, Volkswagen Amarok, and the soon-to-arrive Nissan Navara.
