The newly launched Hurricane 4 Turbo engine makes its debut in the 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee and will eventually extend to other models.

Stellantis has introduced the all-new Hurricane 4 Turbo engine, providing 324 horsepower—54 horsepower more than the existing V6—and supporting hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and traditional configurations.

Earlier today, Jeep unveiled the 2026 Grand Cherokee, which introduces a completely new turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. This engine is more powerful and efficient compared to the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 and will later feature in additional models.

Officially named the Hurricane 4 Turbo, the engine generates 324 hp (248 kW / 337 PS) and 332 lb-ft (450 Nm) of torque, marking a significant enhancement over the naturally aspirated V6, which offers 293 hp (218 kW / 297 PS) and 260 lb-ft (352 Nm). It also surpasses the Wrangler’s turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, which produces 270 hp (201 kW / 274 PS) and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm).

The impressive performance of the engine allows it to “confidently propel various vehicle sizes, from compact to full size.” The manufacturer indicated that the powertrain can accommodate conventional, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid applications.

This is a major development, and it is likely we will see this engine utilized across a broad spectrum of Stellantis vehicles globally.

Inside the Hurricane 4 Turbo, Stellantis powertrain expert Micky Bly characterized it as a “clean sheet design” that incorporates turbulent jet ignition (TJI) combustion technology.

According to the company, the “Hurricane 4 Turbo uses a spark plug to ignite a small quantity of fuel in a cup-like pre-chamber located above each cylinder. The ignited fuel expands and jets into the combustion chamber, leading to a quicker and more thorough burn of the air-fuel mixture, which promotes enhanced performance and fuel efficiency.”

Operating under the Miller Cycle, the engine includes a variable geometry turbocharger and a compression ratio of 12:1. Each cylinder features two spark plugs—one for the TJI chamber and another for the main combustion chamber.

Combining port and direct injection systems adds to its sophistication. A controller decides which system to employ or activates both for maximum output. This combination of efficiency and responsiveness characterizes the new four-cylinder engine.

Additional highlights include an aluminum block, an aluminum cylinder head, and improved internals compared to the current turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder.

Similar to the 3.0-liter Hurricane inline-six, the engine is equipped with a Plasma Transfer Wire Arc coating in the cylinder bores, providing ten times more wear resistance than traditional iron cylinder liners. It also includes an electric water pump and a variable displacement oil pump to minimize parasitic losses.

With its new design, the Hurricane 4 Turbo aims to be a “smooth-running engine that utilizes 10 percent less fuel while delivering 20 percent more power than our current 2.0-liter DOHC I-4.”

This implies that, in the Wrangler, the engine could achieve approximately 22 mpg in the city, 25 mpg on the highway, and 23 mpg combined, representing a slight increase over the current ratings of up to 20 mpg in the city, 23 mpg on the highway, and 21 mpg combined.

We anticipate more information to be revealed in the upcoming months; the engine will be manufactured in Dundee, Michigan, with plans for future production in Kokomo, Indiana, as part of a previously announced investment.
