GM Has Identified a Solution for Corvette Fire Hazard, but Owners Must Remain Patient | Carscoops
The necessary component for the fix will take some time to arrive at dealers, and GM warns owners to exercise caution while refueling.
Over 23,000 Z06 and ZR1 models are being recalled across the country. GM has not disclosed how long it will take to manufacture the new shields. Owners are advised to be vigilant when refueling due to the risk of fire.
A safety concern has put GM in a difficult position, with numerous Corvettes temporarily out of commission as engineers work on a solution. The issue pertains to the 2023–2025 Corvette Z06 and the 2025–2026 Corvette ZR1, all of which were recalled last month due to a potential fire risk. Although a solution appears to be ready, owners might still face delays before their vehicles are officially deemed safe.
The issue revolves around a minor yet significant flaw. If excess fuel leaks into the filter pocket, the left-side cooling fan of the mid-engine supercar could direct vapors or droplets towards hot components like the engine, heightening the risk of fire. This concern is not merely theoretical, as footage exists of a Z06 igniting at a gas station.
A Solution in Development
When GM announced the recall, it stated that affected vehicles would receive a new insert/shield to redirect any spilled fuel. Eager for updates on the part's development, the MidEngineCorvetteForum contacted GM and learned that the component has been designed and is now awaiting large-scale production.
“GM has developed the recall remedy (an insert/shield to divert spilled fuel) and is working to quickly source production and deliver it to dealers,” GM stated. “Once the parts are available, GM will notify affected vehicle owners about remedy availability and encourage them to schedule appointments with their local dealerships. In the meantime, vehicle owners can visit gm.com/service and enter their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) for recall information.”
Delays Anticipated
There is currently no timeline for when GM will commence production of the new part. According to CorvetteBlogger, approximately 1,630 brand-new Corvette Z06s are presently stuck at dealership lots due to this issue. Considering that more than 23,000 Z06 and ZR1s are affected by the recall, customers may have to wait an extended period before their vehicles can be repaired.
This situation is particularly concerning for those who have purchased a new Z06 or ZR1 but have not yet taken delivery, as Chevrolet will not begin shipping their cars until the issue is resolved. For those with affected models already in their possession, GM is advising them to exercise additional caution when refueling by ensuring the nozzle is fully inserted, turning off the engine, and avoiding topping off after the pump clicks.
