The upcoming C63 from AMG is eliminating the four-cylinder engine, yet it will not reintroduce a V8. | Carscoops
The company has ultimately determined that the four-cylinder C63 has not been successful.
Mercedes has confirmed that the C63 will transition from a four-cylinder engine to a straight-six.
It remains uncertain whether the new AMG will adopt a hybrid system or maintain a traditional combustion engine.
The 3.0-liter straight-six engine is sourced from models such as the CLE 53 and E53 AMG.
The contentious phase of the Mercedes-AMG C63 S E Performance and its debated four-cylinder engine appears to be concluding. AMG is set to replace the 2.0-liter turbo with a 3.0-liter straight-six, a change that brings the C63 more in line with competitors and may help regain its performance reputation.
Though an official timeline has yet to be established, Mathias Geiser, a member of Mercedes' board responsible for sales and marketing, has confirmed that this change is forthcoming for the performance variant of the upcoming generation C-Class, which was recently previewed in electric form at the Munich motor show.
To be fair, while the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine in the current C63 has its merits, including praised power and responsiveness in the A45 S, the plug-in hybrid setup contradicts the traditional V8 engines of earlier C63 models. Moreover, AMG's departure from a V8 in the C63 occurs while BMW and Audi continue to use six-cylinder engines.
A Confirmed Change
Rumors about the shift from a four-cylinder to a 3.0-liter straight-six have been circulating for several months, and Geiser confirmed this transition in a recent interview with AutoExpress.
“We will have some options where we had a four-cylinder, which will also be available as a six-cylinder going forward,” he stated. “There may or may not be a hybrid, it might be purely internal combustion, perhaps. We will inform you when we reach that point.”
What To Expect
Even though a straight-six isn't a V8, the current G80 M3 and M4 demonstrate that a six-cylinder can be as thrilling as a V8. Mercedes’ most advanced straight-six engine, found in the CLE 53 Coupe, produces 442 hp with the assistance of a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. The E53 AMG also utilizes this same engine but is paired with a plug-in hybrid system, yielding a combined output of 603 hp.
While these numbers are significantly lower than the 671 hp of the current C63 S's plug-in hybrid four-cylinder, the existing M3 Competition produces 523 hp, and there are no complaints regarding its power. Even if the revamped C63 S matches the BMW in power and delivers the right auditory feedback, it could win over enthusiasts back to AMG.
Mercedes-Benz has previewed the next-gen C-Class EV, showcasing the brand’s new large illuminated grille.
