This Comeback of the Retro Stellantis Van Revives a Neglected Classic | Carscoops
Italian coachbuilder Caselani has introduced a new van inspired by Fiat's classic LCV from the 1960s.
This retro-themed conversion was designed by automotive designer David Obendorfer and is built on the Fiat Ducato platform, available in various bodystyles.
Transforming a simple van into an eye-catching vehicle requires imagination, and a touch of nostalgia certainly adds to the allure. Caselani has repeatedly demonstrated that utility vehicles can embody vintage aesthetics just as effectively as classic coupes. Their latest endeavor revives the essence of the 1960s Fiat 616N, now built on a modern Fiat Ducato platform.
The change extends beyond mere aesthetics, as the Ducato’s exterior has been entirely reimagined to evoke the charm of its mid-century predecessor. The design, crafted by David Obendorfer, also includes his previous retro van designs inspired by Citroen, such as the Jumper, Spacetourer, Berlingo, and Ami.
Nostalgia Meets Utility
The enhanced 616N features classic elements such as round headlights and taillights, a vintage-style hood, and curved lines accentuating the front and rear fenders. These details harken back to the original Fiat 615 and 616 vans produced in the 1950s and 60s. While the upper body, roof, and greenhouse of the Ducato remain mostly intact, they blend seamlessly with the newly designed panels. The interior layout and mechanical foundations are also preserved from the base model.
Caselani has released renderings and a brief video showcasing the first two builds, which are configured as campervans. However, the conversion kit will not be exclusive to campervans; other variants will include standard vans, box trucks, and tow trucks, each featuring customized modifications. Customers can select from nine solid color options and three two-tone finishes for further personalization.

Under the hood, a 2.2-liter Multijet turbodiesel engine is available in three output configurations: 120 hp, 140 hp, and 180 hp. For those interested in electric options, the all-electric Fiat E-Ducato variant is expected to be compatible as well. This version offers 268 horsepower from a single motor, powered by a robust 110 kWh battery pack.
While the Fiat Ducato serves as the most suitable donor vehicle, the kit is also likely compatible with its counterparts, including the Citroen Jumper, Peugeot Boxer, Opel Movano, Toyota ProAce Max, Iveco Super Jolly, and Ram ProMaster, as they share the same underpinnings, interiors, and body panels, differing mainly in grilles and badges.
The Caselani 616N is set to make its public appearance at the Caravan Salon 2025 in Düsseldorf, Germany, on August 29. Pricing details have not yet been disclosed, but the model is already featured on the official website of the Italian coachbuilder.
