Lamborghini is confronted with a 27.5% tariff in the U.S., leading potential buyers to delay their purchases.
CEO Stephan Winkelmann notes that even affluent customers are mindful of their expenditures.
The launch of the new $3.5M Fenomeno hypercar is overshadowed by uncertainty regarding tariffs.
It might be easy to assume that those purchasing super-luxury brands like Lamborghini are unaffected by economic concerns—such as the increased costs linked to the recently imposed U.S. tariffs on imports. However, this notion is inaccurate. Even wealthy customers of Lamborghini are not pleased about the added financial burden. This insight comes from a recent interview with Stephan Winkelmann.
Tariffs Impact Everyone
While we may initially believe that the wealthy are shielded from price increases, CEO Winkelmann underscores the reality: they are affluent for a reason—they carefully monitor their finances and shun unnecessary expenses.
Currently, European manufacturers like Lamborghini are grappling with a 27.5 percent tariff on their exports to the U.S. This rate is nearly double the 15 percent that the White House announced last week but has not yet implemented. For vehicles that begin around $400,000 and can exceed a million dollars, this additional cost is significant enough that some potential buyers prefer to wait and assess the situation.
“Some are holding off because they want to confirm that this is the final figure,” Winkelmann shared with CNBC. While some buyers are moving forward, others are negotiating the ultimate price. Could such a disruption in business lead Lamborghini to consider relocating production? Other automakers have taken that step to avoid tariffs, but such a move is unlikely here.
Money to Burn? Not Quite
Winkelmann characterized the “Made in Italy” label as a fundamental aspect of the brand. This factor adds to Lamborghini’s allure, but it also means that customers need to absorb the tariffs imposed during Trump’s administration. “They are millionaires or billionaires for a reason, so they are savvy in their financial decisions,” Winkelmann commented.
“For us, free trade is the ideal strategy. We all recognize that it’s what we desire. But the reality is complex, and we must navigate it in the context of our business. We are prepared to confront whatever challenges arise.”
Prices Are Already Increasing
One aspect of the brand’s strategy seems to be raising prices, a trend reflected across the industry as a direct consequence of tariffs. Analysts had cautioned that it would be consumers, not companies, who would bear the burden of tariffs, and this prediction is indeed coming to fruition. Lamborghini has increased its prices by 7-10 percent, making the effects of tariffs even more pronounced.
