Toyota Revamps Its Smallest Sedan with a GR Sport Transformation Featuring Hybrid Power | Carscoops

This GR-branded hybrid sedan sacrifices top speed for a revamped bodykit and improved handling compared to the standard Yaris Ativ.

Toyota introduces a hybrid powertrain and a sporty GR Sport variant for the Yaris Ativ.

The hybrid system generates a total of 110 hp and claims to achieve 69 MPG.

The Yaris Ativ HEV GR Sport comes with an aggressive bodykit and upgraded handling features.

The Toyota Yaris Ativ, also referred to as the Vios in certain regions, is a compact sedan often likened to a smaller Corolla. Three years after the introduction of the current generation in Thailand, Toyota is expanding the appeal of this sub-compact model with a hybrid powertrain and a new GR Sport variant targeting drivers seeking a sportier experience.

      Details of the GR Model

Beginning with the sportiest version, the Gazoo Racing package features a custom bodykit for a more dynamic appearance. The redesigned front bumper incorporates larger air intakes, complemented by deeper side skirts, a rear diffuser, and a subtle black spoiler.

The aesthetic is completed with 17-inch alloy wheels and black detailing on the roof and mirror caps, along with GR badges on both ends. Buyers can select from three color options: Platinum White Pearl, Red Mica Metallic, or Attitude Black Mica.

Inside, the GR Sport maintains the sporty theme with black synthetic leather seating, gray stitching, and GR logos featured on the steering wheel and headrests. The segment's equipment level is generous, including a Pioneer six-speaker audio system, a 10.1-inch infotainment screen, wireless charging, automatic climate control, ambient lighting, and the Toyota Safety Sense driver assistance package.

      Electrified Powertrain

Similar to other GR Sport models, the emphasis here is on handling rather than sheer power. The suspension and steering have been specifically re-calibrated for this trim, while the addition of front and rear stabilizer bars enhances cornering balance.

Another significant update for the Yaris Ativ is the introduction of a self-charging hybrid powertrain option. This system is adapted from the Yaris and Yaris Cross, which share the same TNGA-B platform.

The setup combines a naturally aspirated 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine producing 90 hp (67 kW / 91 PS) with an electric motor generating 79 hp (59 kW / 80 PS). Altogether, the system delivers 110 hp (82 kW / 111 PS) to the front wheels via an e-CVT, supported by a 0.7 kWh lithium-ion battery.

Drivers can choose from Eco, Normal, or Power modes to match their driving preferences. Fuel efficiency is a standout feature, with Toyota citing a figure of 29.4 km/l, equivalent to 3.4 l/100 km or 69 mpg. The hybrid is available in both the GR Sport variant and a Premium option, which replaces the sportier bodykit with 16-inch wheels and a more understated black and gray interior.

For those who prefer a simpler option, Toyota still offers a 1.2-liter four-cylinder petrol engine with 93 hp (69 kW / 94 PS), available exclusively with a CVT. This non-hybrid model is offered in four trims: Premium Luxury, Premium, Smart, and Sport, while the GR Sport treatment is exclusive to hybrids.

      Pricing

In Thailand, the Yaris Ativ HEV is the most economical hybrid in Toyota’s lineup, with the Premium model starting at 719,000 baht ($22,200) and the GR Sport at 769,000 baht ($23,800). Naturally, the hybrid model is priced higher than the base 1.2-liter petrol version, which starts at 549,000 baht ($17,000).

For those interested in bodykits, the optional Charismo Drift package is priced at 19,990 baht ($620), while the GR accessory package is available for 28,990 baht ($900).

As reported by Nikkei, Japanese car manufacturers are losing market share in Thailand to new Chinese competitors, with their stake dropping from 90 percent a few years ago to 71 percent currently. Despite a recent downturn, Toyota remains market leader with a 38 percent share and aims to attract budget-conscious consumers with more affordable electrified options like the Yaris Ativ HEV.

In addition to Thailand, where the Yaris Ativ is manufactured, the hybrid version will be exported to 23 countries, mainly in Southeast Asia.
