Subaru's Overlooked STI Featuring Steel Wheels Could Be The Most Authentic WRX Ever Created | Carscoops
A rare WRX STI, exclusive to Japan and designed for rally homologation, is set to go up for auction in the UK, remaining in its original condition.
Subaru's Spec C was developed to homologate the WRX STI for WRC Group N racing, featuring lighter glass and aluminum body panels to reduce overall weight. Its powertrain consists of a 2.0L turbocharged flat-four engine that generates 316 hp and 318 lb-ft of torque.
With numerous Subaru Impreza WRX variants appearing over the years, some have gone unnoticed. One such variant is the Spec C, a model exclusive to Japan based on the second-generation WRX STI. Designed as a lightweight homologation vehicle for the World Rally Championship’s Group N class, it remains an intriguing yet lesser-known part of Subaru's performance lineup.
Now, a rare Spec C has appeared in the UK and is available through Iconic Auctioneers. The auction house highlights that, true to its rally heritage, Subaru anticipated owners would replace the factory wheels. While many have done so, this particular Spec C retains its original steel wheels, enhancing its appeal and giving it a certain authenticity as though it never left the homologation workshop.
This 2006 model, finished in Pure White, is accident-free and in good condition, having covered over 64,000 kilometers (39,800 miles). To achieve weight reduction and fulfill rally requirements, Subaru replaced the standard glass with thinner materials and utilized aluminum for certain body panels.
Additionally, it features a small hatch on the roof to allow airflow into the cabin for cooling purposes, as climate control systems can add unnecessary weight, which is undesirable in racing.
Under its lightweight hood lies Subaru's EJ207 2.0-liter turbocharged flat-four engine producing 316 hp and 318 lb-ft of torque. It comes equipped with a six-speed manual transmission and Subaru’s renowned Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system. The WRX also includes STI-tuned Bilstein dampers, reinforced subframes, and thicker stabilizer bars.
It is unclear when this model was imported into the UK, but it is likely one of only a few that made the journey from Japan. The auction house anticipates a selling price between £20,000 ($26,700) and £25,000 ($33,400).
If you are in the UK and searching for one of the most exceptional STI models from its era, this could be a great opportunity. The auction is scheduled for August 23 at the Silverstone circuit, with the complete listing available to view online.
