When Your Heart Desires a Rolls-Royce but Your Wedding Budget Allows for a Toyota Taxi | Carscoops

Tokyo's Meiji Kinenkan has converted an ordinary Toyota JPN Taxi into a delightful ceremonial vehicle for brides, grooms, and VIPs.

The hybrid taxi now boasts a custom two-tone exterior, retro-styled wheels, and plush red leather interior.

This modified JPN Taxi operates on a hybrid LPG system and has been upgraded with a larger fuel tank.

Weddings can be quite chaotic, so why not include a taxi in the arrangements? In Japan, where meticulous attention to detail is common, one wedding planner decided that the ideal vehicle for newlyweds isn’t a limousine or a classic Rolls-Royce, but a repurposed city taxi. Surprisingly, this choice has proven effective, as this unconventional bridal transport blends practicality with a unique charm.

Outside of Japan, most people are not familiar with the Toyota JPN Taxi, which has been in service in cities such as Tokyo, Bangkok, and Hong Kong since 2017. The vehicle was designed with professional drivers in mind, focusing on comfort, space, efficiency, and low operational costs. However, one particular model has taken on an unexpected new purpose.

The customized JPN Taxi is owned by Meiji Kinenkan, an established wedding venue near Tokyo. It was specifically adapted for transporting newlyweds and VIPs to significant ceremony locations, including Meiji Jingu Shrine, Meiji Memorial Hall, and Forest Terrace Meiji Jingu Torinso. To fit its ceremonial use, both the interior and exterior received a makeover.

It features a striking two-tone paint scheme in Deep Maroon and Black, accented by gold pinstripes that line the car's body as if it were preparing for a formal event. The gold details extend further, wrapping around the tire walls and vintage-style wheels, complemented by Deep Maroon center caps.

The Toyota badges have been replaced with gold flower emblems, fully embracing the ceremonial theme. Additionally, the license plate displays the number 1122, a reference to the expression “Good Couple” in Japanese.

Inside, the rear bench has been reupholstered in luxurious red leather, replacing the original taxi’s anti-bacterial fabric. This enhancement aims to create a more elegant atmosphere for the couple, although the rest of the interior remains largely unchanged from the original vehicle.

Mechanically, the taxi remains untouched. Beneath the stylish paint and gold accents, it is still a JPN Taxi featuring the same self-charging hybrid system with a 1.5-liter LPG engine, a single electric motor, and a floor-mounted nickel-metal hydride battery. For 2025, it was fitted with a larger 58-liter (15.3-gallon) LPG tank, resulting in fewer fuel stops during wedding events.

The organizers believe that newlyweds will enjoy this customized ride, complete with a chauffeur to allow them to revel in the joy of their ceremony. While it may not achieve the immense luxury of Monaco’s unique 2011 Lexus LS 600h Landaulet, this unique Toyota certainly secures its place as an unconventional wedding day vehicle.
