      A few years ago, Subaru collaborated with long-time tuner and rally supporter Prodrive to create a thrilling tribute to the WRC97 rally car and its street-legal counterpart, the legendary 22B STI. Although the Prodrive P25 now has a retro appearance, it may seem quite modest at first glance, and while its 450-horsepower output is robust even by today's Subaru standards, it doesn't seem particularly groundbreaking. However, a closer look reveals why this compact rally tribute sold out at its $600,000 price tag.

      If you believe that's quite a sum for a millennial's dream inspired by Gran Turismo, you'll be surprised by the P25’s appreciation trend. In fact, calling it depreciation is inaccurate; it's more of an appreciation curve. The example for sale on Race Cars For You has been priced at 700,000 pounds—$932,736 U.S. They’re asking nearly a million dollars for a vehicle with last-generation muscle car power and a design from 1997.

      Here's the reality: it might just be worth it.

      Both Jerry and I have had the chance to drive this vehicle. Admittedly, as an elder millennial, I feel compelled to say it’s almost sublime. The sound of the turbocharged 2.5-liter boxer engine brings back peak WRC nostalgia, and everything about the chassis and suspension feels exquisitely tuned. While the WRX and STI (RIP) were generally marketed as street-legal rally cars, the P25 is much closer to that description than you might expect.

      Let’s set aside the raw power number for the moment, as it's the least intriguing detail on the P25’s specifications. Instead, consider its lightweight construction. With extensive use of carbon fiber and other weight-reducing materials, the P25 weighs merely 2,500 pounds. That's 5.6 pounds per horsepower—50% lighter than a C8 Corvette. There’s no manual transmission, as that's not how rally cars operate. Instead, it features a sequential gearbox, which might feel a bit odd transitioning from a conventional automatic (or even a typical street-car sequential), but hey, it's a race car!

      The version Jerry and I drove around Milford was equipped with standard bucket seats and three-point seat belts, along with a rather understated set of wheels. The buyer opted for the extra racing-style seats and Schroth harnesses, plus classic gold wheels. That's precisely how I'd choose to buy it. Time to start looking for loose change...
