As the saying goes, variety is the spice of life. Who genuinely enjoys doing the same thing repeatedly? This idea applies to various aspects of life, particularly when purchasing a recreational vehicle. Whether it’s a weekend car, motorcycle, boat, or, in this scenario, a side-by-side, selecting the right model that accommodates a wide array of needs and desires ensures maximum enjoyment, benefits, and a satisfying ownership experience.

Previously, I've encountered some SxSs that prioritize speed and performance, others that excel in utility, and some that focus on affordability. However, like I discovered during a comprehensive test of snowmobiles earlier this year, picking “the right one” can be challenging, and even if you do, you might regret that choice a few months down the line.

This is exactly why I appreciated my experience with the 2025 Polaris Xpedition ADV5 Northstar, often described as the Swiss Army Knife of side-by-sides.

      **The Basics**

The Polaris Xpedition is designed for adventure and to escape the annoyances of everyday life and people. It is crafted with overlanding in mind but is also built to work hard and play hard, boasting the longest range in its category along with numerous comforts that make you forget about your SUV or truck back home. Let’s be honest: your daily G-Wagen, Range Rover, or Hummer EV is meant for commuting and playing the part of an off-road vehicle.

With a 12.5-gallon tank, the Xpedition has a range of over 200 miles, allowing you to explore trails without fuel concerns. Its 1,000cc liquid-cooled engine generates 114 horsepower, enabling speeds of up to 70 mph effortlessly. Additionally, it has a payload capacity of 1,030 pounds and can tow up to 2,000 pounds (according to hitch rating). A switch allows you to toggle between rear- and four-wheel drive, along with high and low gears for forward and reverse.

A ground clearance of 14 inches, while not impressive in terms of a Subway sandwich, is sufficient to navigate most obstacles on the trail, even if it appears otherwise. (Always exercise caution, of course.) The long-travel suspension features Fox 2.0 Podium shocks QS3 with position-sensitive spiral technology upfront and 2.5 Podium QS3s at the rear. Notably, the rear offers 15 inches of ground clearance, so if you encounter larger obstacles, just keep that in mind (though I wouldn’t recommend reversing to tackle them). Finally, the 14-inch wheels, fitted with 30-inch Pro Armor Crawler XP tires, help you traverse nearly any terrain.

While the Xpedition's specifications may not sound extravagant, its true differentiating factor lies within the cabin. It accommodates five passengers and features a fully enclosed canopy covering the cargo bed behind the rear seats. Additionally, it’s equipped with a fully operational climate control system, allowing comfort regardless of outdoor temperatures. During my testing, I utilized both heating and cooling, which effectively adjusted the cabin's temperature. Need fresh air? Push a button to lower the power windows on all four doors. Want even more airflow? Fold the windshield out for added exposure to the elements, though I wouldn’t recommend it on muddy trails.

The driver and passenger seats are adjustable fore and aft, and the seatbacks recline. The steering wheel is telescopic and height-adjustable. While the rear seats aren’t adjustable, their bottoms fold up to create a flat cargo floor when necessary. Additionally, if you forget to buckle up, the Xpedition will limit your speed to about 15 mph. As with previous Polaris models, the ride comes equipped with a comprehensive RideConnect infotainment system featuring music, GPS, a rearview camera, and other trail functionalities.

Initially, I intended to test the Xpedition in winter snow to showcase its enclosed cabin, climate control, and the standard 4,500-pound winch. The idea behind a rig like this is to venture out on a solo trail and feel confident in your fuel and tools for an extended exploration. However, due to shipping delays and unusual weather resulting in record-low snowfall in Indiana, I had to adjust my plans.

My first off-road outing happened in cold conditions, but without snow—just a lot of sticky mud. I explored some of the deepest ruts and stickiest mud I’ve encountered, reassured that with a winch and plenty of winching points, I’d be alright if stuck. I had company, and it felt great to stay warm while off-roading in temperatures around 30 degrees. Initially, I wore gloves, but after about 30 minutes, the cabin was warm enough

The cost of entry is high, yet the Xpedition justifies its status as a vehicle suitable for both work and recreation.
