Alfa Romeo Might Be Maserati's Key to Redemption | Carscoops
Maserati is facing challenges, but they may benefit from closer collaboration with Alfa Romeo.
The two brands are likely to share platforms, engines, software, and electronics in the near future.
The upcoming Giulia and Stelvio may provide the foundation for the next Quattroporte and Levante models.
Maserati's lineup has become quite disorganized, as they have discontinued essential models like the Ghibli, Levante, and Quattroporte. This situation has left them with the overpriced Grecale and a variety of sports cars.
Originally, Maserati was developing a new Quattroporte, but its development was reportedly halted in 2023. The model was then delayed, and Stellantis pulled a significant investment from the company, raising further concerns about its future.
However, all hope may not be lost. A new report indicates that Maserati could utilize parts from Alfa Romeo to create new models. Specifically, the redesigned Giulia and Stelvio could form the basis for the next-generation Quattroporte and Levante.
In an interview with Autocar, Santo Ficili, the CEO of Alfa Romeo and Maserati, mentioned that they are aiming for “synergies” between the two brands, which could lead to a closer relationship in their vehicle lineups. This implies that the forthcoming Quattroporte and Levante might be built on the STLA Large platform, which also supports various other models like the Dodge Charger and Jeep Wagoneer S.
Initially, the next Quattroporte was intended to be exclusively electric, but Maserati now seems to have reconsidered this approach. Ficili noted, “We need to talk with our customers because they are a bit confused at this time,” with so many options available, such as hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and battery electric vehicles.
He elaborated that moving to an all-electric model is a matter of timing, but they are not yet prepared for that shift. Therefore, he indicated, “We need to consider MHEV and PHEV engines, depending on the progression of the technology we aim to pursue.”
This strategy could make the Giulia and Stelvio strong candidates for future models, as they are expected to be available with gas, plug-in hybrid, and electric powertrains. Additionally, leveraging Alfa Romeo and the STLA Large platform would accelerate development while also reducing costs.
Nevertheless, this approach carries risks, as the models from Alfa Romeo and Maserati could end up being too alike. Alfa has already experienced this, with the Tonale being nearly identical to the Dodge Hornet.
That said, Ficili recognized the importance of maintaining a distinction between Alfa Romeo and Maserati. However, he believes that they can share many components, including “platforms, electronic architectures, software, and likely powertrains.”
