      The new blackout license plate will be launched soon, and it is already attracting attention due to its sleek design and limited availability throughout the state.

      Set to be available on August 8, Indiana's blackout plate features a minimalist black-and-white design. This plate can be used on most non-commercial vehicles, such as cars, motorcycles, trucks, and RVs.

      Authorities anticipate a significant demand, given that similar designs have quickly sold out in other states.

      Residents of Indiana will have the option of a stylish blackout license plate starting August 8. The Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) will provide this minimalist plate for various vehicles, including RVs, motorcycles, passenger cars, and trucks weighing under 11,000 pounds. This move places Indiana among the growing list of states offering sleek monochrome plate designs.

      The plate boasts a classic and simple appearance, featuring a black background with white outlines and white reflective lettering. A version for disability access is also being developed. It's essential to note that this isn’t a standard plate but requires residents to pay an extra fee.

      For those desiring the plate before their current one expires, a replacement fee of $9.50 will apply. New plate applicants will incur a fee of $45, with an additional $45 fee for personalization. Residents can obtain the plates at their local BMV location, via self-service kiosks, or by ordering them online. However, combining the blackout theme with other specialized plate designs isn’t permitted.

      Despite this restriction, the state anticipates the plate will be a huge success. Officials hosted an event to promote the new plate, showcasing notable enthusiast vehicles, including a Ford Mustang, a Shelby Cobra replica, an International Scout SUV, a motorcycle, and a Can-Am Spyder. There were even blackout-themed snacks available.

      If the launch performs as well as similar ones in other areas, there may be a rapid sell-out, as seen recently in Iowa with a similar design. Paul Cornelius, an official from the Iowa Department of Transportation, remarked, “Nothing has ever really been like this. We haven’t had any other plates that have been this significant and, I would say, have been this popular, this fast.”

      Blackout plates are becoming a trend across the nation. Indiana joins multiple states offering black license plate options. Some, like Kansas, Washington, Florida, Montana, and Arizona, feature white accents, while others, such as Colorado, Tennessee, and California, offer a completely black background with only white lettering. The simplicity and elegance of black designs seem to appeal to a wide audience.

      This is not always the case, though; Oklahoma recently introduced a new standard plate after the public expressed demand for a different design. Sometimes, the best approach to effective public design is to keep it straightforward.
