The 205 Turbo 16 is equipped with a turbocharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine producing 197 hp.

All 200 units produced share the same grey paint scheme and are left-hand drive models.

This particular unit has only 3,216 km on the odometer and has undergone extensive mechanical restoration.

While the Renault 5 Turbo might be the most iconic mid-engine hot hatch of the 1980s, Peugeot also created its own mid-engine variant of the 205 to compete in Group B rallying.

A mere 200 road versions were manufactured, and today, they rank among the most coveted collector cars from the Group B era. Currently, one remarkably low-mileage example is expected to sell for as much as $350,000 at auction next month.

Peugeot's rally campaign was highly successful, with the 205 T16 winning back-to-back WRC titles in 1985 and 1986. The production models closely followed the competition versions, differing slightly in the removal of some high-tech components and race-specific aerodynamic features. Every road version was painted the same color and designed as a left-hand drive, a choice that facilitated the limited production process.

      Compact Size, Serious Performance

Directly behind the passenger area lies the original turbocharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine that provided 197 hp and 188 lb-ft (255 Nm) when this vehicle was new. Although this may not seem impressive by today’s hot hatch standards, power was transmitted to all four wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox. Additionally, the vehicle weighs less than 1,000 kg, or roughly 2,200 lbs.

Bonhams is overseeing the sale of this specific 205 Turbo 16, which has been meticulously cared for in recent times. The current owner acquired the vehicle in January 2022 and has made considerable investments in its mechanical condition. Recent upgrades include a new suspension system, radiator, clutch, alternator, and enhanced coolant lines. In total, the seller is reported to have spent $200,000 on restoring and maintaining the car.

Despite all the improvements, the car has only been driven 3,216 km (1,998 miles), making it likely one of the lowest-mileage 205 Turbo 16s in existence. To the untrained eye, it may not appear particularly exciting, but if Bonhams’ pre-auction estimate is correct, it could potentially reach a price comparable to a brand-new Ferrari 296 GTB.
