Waymo is set to introduce its paid autonomous ride-hailing service to Dallas in 2026, thanks to an unexpected collaboration.

Avis Budget Group will oversee the management of Waymo’s fleet and vehicle maintenance.

Dallas has the ambition to eradicate all traffic fatalities on its roads by 2030.

While Tesla's Robotaxi service has recently attracted significant attention with its launch in a geofenced part of Austin, Waymo is ready to expand its operations to a second Texas city. Currently, Waymo is conducting over 250,000 paid trips weekly in Austin and other major U.S. cities, and now it aims to establish its presence in Dallas, potentially teaching Tesla valuable lessons in running a successful robotaxi business.

Instead of managing independently, Waymo is utilizing Avis's extensive operational expertise to ensure efficient daily management as it enters this new market. The rental company will assist with fleet operations, infrastructure maintenance, and general depot management.

“We are excited to bring our fully autonomous ride-hailing service to the people of Dallas next year, marking the beginning of a new era in safe and smooth transportation,” stated Waymo co-chief executive Tekedra Mawakana. “By partnering with Avis, Waymo will provide more riders with a hassle-free way to travel.”

Although Waymo did not specify the exact areas of Dallas that will be served by its robotaxi service, it expressed confidence in its ability to assist Dallas in achieving its Vision Zero initiative, which aims to eliminate all traffic-related fatalities and cut serious injury crashes by 50 percent by 2030.

“We are thrilled that fully autonomous ride-hailing services are set to commence in Dallas next year,” remarked Dallas city manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert. “The collaboration between Waymo and Avis will introduce an innovative, technology-driven transportation option for both our residents and visitors. We are eagerly anticipating the launch of this new service.”

Dallas is just the beginning of Waymo's expansion plans. The company is reportedly considering future launches in Houston and San Antonio, as well as San Diego, Boston, and New York. According to ABC News, Waymo is also eyeing Tokyo as its first international market for its robotaxis.
