Tesla’s Lars Moravy claims the new Roadster will be the “last best driver’s car.”
Unveiled in 2017, the Roadster still does not have a final production version available.
Customers can still place $50,000 deposits despite the absence of confirmed pricing or delivery dates.
Even in an era where delayed product launches are common, the second-generation Tesla Roadster has become somewhat of a joke in the automotive community. Initially presented as a functional prototype in November 2017, Tesla had vowed to start manufacturing the electric hypercar in 2020. Now, as we approach the end of 2025, Tesla has yet to reveal the production version.
Despite its extended delay, Tesla maintains that the Roadster is still under development, continuously making ambitious promises. Lars Moravy, Tesla's head of vehicle engineering, stated that the Roadster will be the “last best driver’s car.” Given the boldness of that claim, it’s surprising that it wasn’t made by Tesla CEO Elon Musk.
New Promises of Progress, But Little Information
Moravy made his comments during the recent X Takeover event, around the 26-minute mark in the linked video. He noted that Musk was recently shown “some cool demos” of the new model but did not elaborate on what those demonstrations entailed.
“We have invested significant time over the past few years reconsidering our approach and what will create an amazing and exciting last best driver’s car,” Moravy mentioned. “We’ve been enhancing it continuously, and it’s even more than just a car. We showcased some exciting demos to Elon last week, and he seemed quite enthusiastic.”
Rocket Thrusters and Ambitious Aspirations
Tesla has made several bold assertions regarding the Roadster. In 2018, Elon Musk mentioned that it would come with a SpaceX option package featuring around 10 small rocket thrusters to “dramatically enhance acceleration, top speed, braking & cornering.”
More recently, in mid-2024, Musk claimed that “the new Tesla Roadster can fly.” Until Tesla demonstrates this publicly, such statements appear to be merely attempts to support the company's stock price.
As we have revealed recently, Tesla continues to accept $50,000 reservations for the Roadster, despite not having disclosed the car’s final pricing or when customers might expect delivery.
