Honda has announced that the Prelude will incorporate chassis components from the Civic Type R.

These features include dual-axis suspension, Brembo brakes, and wider front and rear tracks.

Tailored tuning for both brakes and suspension aims to enhance the comfort of the GT.

The Prelude is nearly ready for the roads, and Honda engineers have exciting surprises planned for coupe enthusiasts. It was previously known that the Prelude would share its platform with the Civic, and now Honda has confirmed that it will also utilize the Civic Type R’s chassis configuration. This will result in improved handling and greater driver engagement, paired with a hybrid powertrain and simulated gear shifts.

More: Will Honda’s New Prelude Be The Best Or Worst Of Both Worlds?

We recently discussed rumors about a possible Prelude Type R, but it seems even the base version of the coupe will incorporate handling features inspired by the Civic Type R.

      Type R Components

In detail, the Prelude will feature suspension components, expanded front and rear tracks, and Brembo front brakes from its high-performance counterpart. It will also be the first model outside of the Type R to utilize the dual-axis front suspension system, originally introduced with the 2017 Civic Type R, which is designed to minimize torque steer and enhance steering accuracy.

Despite these shared elements, Honda engineers have conducted specific tuning for both the suspension and brakes. This ensures that the Prelude fulfills its role as a grand tourer, emphasizing comfort and balanced dynamics rather than outright track performance. Initial test drives in Japan indicate that the ride successfully strikes this balance, offering a sportier sensation than the Civic while retaining a smoother and more composed ride.

A Hybrid That Functions Like a Manual

The new Prelude will feature Honda’s two-motor hybrid system, which is also used in the Civic. However, for the coupe, this system will include a new feature called “Honda S+ Shift.” This system combines engine sound effects, customized torque delivery, and paddle shifters to create the feel of traditional gear changes. A dedicated button on the center console activates this mode, providing drivers with a more engaging driving experience.

Honda has already showcased the exterior and interior of the sixth-generation Prelude through pre-production prototypes. The design features a two-door coupe body with a practical hatchback-style rear. Inside, the cabin features a 2+2 layout, and the dashboard includes several design elements from the closely related Honda Civic and Acura Integra.

When will it be available for purchase?

The 2026 Prelude is anticipated to launch in North American dealerships this fall, with subsequent releases planned for Japan and Europe. It is positioned as a sportier option compared to the Civic, providing familiar hybrid efficiency with an enhanced performance edge. Recently, the Prelude made a notable appearance at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK, where it tackled the renowned hill climb course.
