The Rocketbox is a modified VW Bus featuring a 509 cubic-inch V8 that generates approximately 560hp.
Constructed by Bodo Reichert, this restomod boasts a luxurious interior and unique design features.
This powerful, vintage-style Bus is poised to attract attention at Mecum’s Monterey auction.
While practicality may not be exciting, it's undeniable that the classic Volkswagen Bus excelled in this area. It could transport many passengers, carry nearly anything, and was affordable enough for nearly anyone to own. Moreover, its straightforward engineering meant maintenance was relatively easy.
If the original Bus had a significant drawback, it was the lackluster air-cooled engine located in the rear. This updated version has addressed that issue by replacing it with a 509 cubic inch V8 engine brimming with power.
Referred to as the Rocketbox by its creator, this Bus merges classic design with impressive performance. This combination is remarkable since the styling of the Type II remains beloved today. A notable achievement of Volkswagen with the new ID. Buzz was enhancing its power for contemporary road conditions.
The listing claims the engine produces around 560 horsepower (417 kW), which is roughly ten times more than the original. This power is transmitted to the rear wheels exclusively through a three-speed automatic transmission. The complete drivetrain is housed within a custom tubular chassis and sits on staggered 17- and 18-inch wheels.
A Decade of Dedication
Although it resembles a classic 21-window van, it didn't originate as such. Builder Bodo Reichert worked on the vehicle for a decade before unfortunately succumbing to cancer. During that time, he expanded the rear quarter panels by six inches to provide the engine with ample cool air. He also directed the exhaust through the walls up to the apex of the F-pillar, resulting in a striking profile that remains subtle.
Classic and Custom Inside and Out
The interior is equally refined, featuring Porsche 914 seats, a bespoke wooden steering wheel, handcrafted consoles, and aftermarket gauges reading 7,194 miles on the odometer. It's bound to be a highlight when it crosses the auction stage at Mecum’s Monterey event next month.
Earlier this year, a dealer listed it for just under $80,000, similar to the prices for the new ID. Buzz. It’s unlikely many enthusiasts would choose the new model over this exquisite piece of craftsmanship. What are your thoughts? Please share in the comments below!
