The updated navigation system merges the best aspects of Rivian’s technology with Google Maps.
This new system features information on approximately 250 million locations worldwide.
Rivian’s mapping capability can plan charging stops and deliver real-time data on charging networks.
For years, Rivian has relied solely on its infotainment system, opting not to incorporate Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, similar to Tesla. However, there is a change underway. Starting this Tuesday, the latest Rivian models will include an enhanced built-in navigation system powered by Google Maps technology.
This update isn’t exactly Android Auto, but it represents progress. Unfortunately for iPhone users who prefer Apple Maps, they will need to adapt to using Google.
Google Maps at the Core
Rivian has collaborated directly with Google to develop a navigation system specifically intended for its electric vehicles. With Google's assistance, the new system features real-time traffic and location information. It also supports user reports from the Google Maps community regarding updates such as lane closures and accidents. Google Places has also been integrated, offering Rivian owners access to information on around 250 million locations globally, including details like hours of operation, contact information, and reviews.
Crucially, the system retains all of Rivian’s built-in navigation features. These include the ‘range on arrival’ function, which provides accurate range estimates based on the owner's driving habits and the use of accessories like trailers. All Rivian models can also curate charging stops for the fastest routes and offer real-time data for compatible charging networks, including Tesla Superchargers and the Rivian Adventure Network.
Updates Beyond the Dashboard
Any updates made to the infotainment systems of the R1T and R1S will be reflected in the Rivian mobile app, simplifying navigation and settings management for owners remotely.
This isn’t the first occasion Rivian has introduced a new Google feature to its vehicles. Late last year, it announced the inclusion of Google Cast. It seems unlikely that Apple CarPlay support will be added in the future, despite Rivian’s system including Apple Music. By keeping its infotainment software proprietary, Rivian claims it can better customize the experience for its customers.
